Instead he seems like a little vengeful bitch who likes to exert his power arbitrarily or whenever he feels like it. All I see going on in this world is chaos and turmoil... Quoting: Clouds in the Sky Your "loving" god sure has a funny way of showing love and comprehension. The only vengeful thing Jesus did was plaiting a scourge and driving the money-lenders from the temple. Some might say that was a righteous act, to be emulated today. He wasn't arbitary, either, healing and helping those who came to Him even when their faith wasn't perfect. |

My brother was sneaking out of the house and taking this bus. It was easy enough for him to get away with since our parents slept in very late on the weekends. The little paperback New Testament he was caught with was given to him by the church he was attending. He would not admit where he got it from, because he didn't want to get busted for going to church on top of the trouble he was already in. My parents did not think it was strange that he was able to obtain one. You could buy a small New Testament at the book store for a couple of bucks and my brother had a paper route, which earned him a bit of spending money. At the time he was caught and grounded, I was not a Christian, and I ridiculed him mercilessly. Years later, I became a Christian too, and only then did my brother begin confiding in me. That was when he told me how he got a hold of that New Testament. |

Yes, I have to agree with you. I gave up on institutionalized religion two decades ago. I have some Christian friends whom I fellowship with, but I have not set foot in a church in nearly 20 years. The more I studied the Bible and prayed, the more I became disenchanted with the churches. They seem to keep getting worse and worse in my opinion. Many churches have gone from being in error about some things to becoming downright profane, appealing to people's greed and carnal nature. A number of churches have become circuses more concerned about offering entertainment than the truth. Back in the days of my youth, when I started sneaking off to church, things were not anywhere near as bad as they are now. There were problems, of course. Even then there was not a single church that held the whole truth and most only offered milk instead of meat, but they were still places where one who loved the Lord could find a home. Today, I would tell anyone searching for God to avoid the churches entirely and focus on Bible study and prayer, then God will lead you to true Christians so that you will have fellowship. |

Those who are true to the gospel are becoming more and more disenchanted with the so-called Christian churches. I really, REALLY encourage you to pick up the book "The Irresistible Revolution" by Shane Claiborne. Right on with what you are saying. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1530791 The entire section about handling snakes and drinking poison is a well known textual addition that occurs in only one gospel that does not occur in the earliest most reliable text You christians need to get off the milk of religion and grow up and find a real relationship with the Creator. Sorry, it's inspired scripture. That "earliest most reliable text" lingo is another lie from the enemy. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1190661 Australia 06/02/2012 04:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There's a difference between getting bit by accident and getting bit on purpose. That man was putting on a show, and boasting about his faith, which is a big no-no in God's eyes. Quoting: Fidokrab Actually that is not what your Bible says regarding snake handling. Mark 16:17-18 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. It doesn't mention "putting on a show" regarding this. Sadly, does this mean you have changed from an atheist, to an agnostic to an excuse maker? It seems this is another verse of the Bible that is untrue! Snake handlers base their actions on Mark 16:17, 18. Those verses include the words: “With their hands they will pick up serpents.” The King James Version and other older translations present those verses as if they were part of the original text. The New Revised Standard Version, The New American Standard Bible, and The New King James Version note that those verses do not appear in most of the oldest manuscripts of Mark’s Gospel. Correct! The older versions of the Mark gospel do not contain Mark 16:9-20 which are believed to be added in the 2nd century. There is an ongoing debate as to whether they should be there. But this then brings up several important problems. If these verses shouldn't be in the Bible then which other verses shouldn't be there? Why were they added and by whom? Also what does this say about Bible inerrancy which most Christians claim and preach? The collection of books known as the Bible is a very flawed document and to accept what it says as fact is minimalist faith/belief. It's in there so it must be true is an epic fail in logic and understanding. |
