I think that at least in the USA, it's been several generations since grandparent involvement was considered acceptable by most parents.

Much less wanted and valued.

I am fortunate in my in-laws, in that at least my mother-in-law is very active in my daughter's life. And I go out of my way to help support, encourage, and strengthen that bond.

Utmost importance, in my opinion.
