Ron Paul supporter has fingers broken, another has his hip displocated, at contested Louisiana GOP convention!!
Louisiana's Republican convention in Shreveport on Saturday resulted in unexpected assaults and arrests, including one man who had his fingers broken. Many were expecting disagreements over the choice of delegates, especially after the state party's executive committee issued 16 pages of new rules before the convention, but it's doubtful that many guessed the severity of the disagreements. The Ron Paul campaign team explained the conflicts in detail.

According to Ron Paul and his campaign staff, 113 of the 180 delegates voted to remove the sitting GOP chairman when he refused to respond to requests for information. The 113 delegates than physically moved their chairs away from the "establishment GOP" and started their own convention. The nearly two-thirds of the delegates began their convention, and that's when the mayhem broke out. Security officials, unaware of the newly formed convention, attacked Henry Herford Jr. His prosthetic hip was dislocated and may have to be replaced. Alex Helwig, chairman of the Rules Committee, was arrested after he made a motion to remove the Republican chair. The Shreveport police released him later; however, some of his fingers were broken during his detainment. Video of Helwig being arrested and assaulted has been circulating the internet and has drawn outrage from Ron Paul supporters. Helwig returned to the Louisiana convention later, walking with the aid of a cane. Many are curious about what happened during his detainment.

According to a witness at the convention, after Alex Helwig, the newly elected chair, was arrested, another chairperson was elected and the convention continued and finished all business, including electing national delegates. Ron Paul supporters are filing a civil rights abuse lawsuit against the GOP.

Alex Helwig, chairman of the Rules Committee

the first chair of the convention had him removed for questioning the rules being used.

then minutes later after the entire floor voted that chair out and started the convention over with a new chair on the other side of the hall.
the new chair had the 1st chair removed.

Mr. Herford was the old man dropped to the floor and is now in need of a hip replacement. he was the first convention chair....the guy who call the police in to have the other man removed...i known it is hard to keep up with it all.

what is blowing my mind here is the police. come by order of alex the first chair to remover someone....then minutes later they attacked alex????? how in gods green acres can that happen? how and why, why use such force on a older man when there were other screaming to not hurt him....then bame down he goes...please tell me why did the police do that?

Alex Helwig was the chair of the rules committee.
it all started when he question the rules Mr. Herford was following. Helwig was the paul supporting delegate....Herford was the original chair of the convention. mostly Herford was not a paul supporter!

edit sorry he was voted the convention chair then assaulted.
but he was the chairperson of the rules committee at the start

this is all falling apart!

Just got back from the convention. Here is a quick summary. 2 days before the convention the LAGOP sent supplemental rules to the delegates and an affidavit that had to be notarized (if running for National delegate) and returned by 9:45 am the day of the convention. Needless to say the supplemental rules were made to thwart democracy (and included items that the delegates could not elect a chair, etc.).

The meeting convened and within a minute a person asked for a point of information to define what would be a quorum or majority vote. The chair (Villere) answered it was to be 3/4. Then a person stood (the chair for our District) and tried to be recognized by the chair. The chair refused to recognize the delegate standing and was trying to pass the credential and rule reports as fast as possible and without any participation. I believe the chair even stated there could be no discussions or objections.

Another person rose to be recognized by the chair and stated that he was elected as the Chair to the rules committee - not the person presented at the podium. The person at the podium tried to continue to discuss the rules report as the person on the floor stated he was the Chair for the Rules committee.

Villere (still acting as chair) asked sergeants of arms to remove the man on the floor from the convention. He was removed rather harshly and was hurt.

this was when the first video happened!
the police leave.
then it goes on!

Then someone made the motion to elect Alex Helwig as our new chair, which passed by a majority of the votes with all the delegates participating. At that point we turned our chairs around to face the newly elected chair and began to conduct business including roll call.

Villere asked that the microphone we were using be turned off. The assembly of delegates indicted he was no longer chair and had no authority. Villere asked the police to step in and remove the chair and take the microphone.

At that point the police were very forceful with the man. He stated he was handicapped (had a hip replacement) but they shoved him and he was on the ground until the medics came.

this is when the second video happened.
again the police crash in and hurt a chairman...that would be 2 chairs down and still going!

the is getting pretty violent folks!
this is not good!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ron Paul supporter has fingers broken, another has his hip displocated, at contested Louisiana GOP convention!!
Why?

As an outsider, this kind of thing makes you wonder how many delegates Ron Paul really has on his side.

The media says it's over, Romney won and now has to face Obama.

Why all the new rules? Why the police intervention? Why not just let these meaningless conventions take place naturally.

Hell, Romney people never cared about delegates before, why be so psycotic after the fact?

Seems to me there must be SOMETHING to the "delegate strategy" or the GOP wouldn't even give a fuck.

Godamn this Tampa convention is going to be interesting!

This is a comment on a Yahoo news article, can anyone verify?

God War • New Orleans, Louisiana • 11 hrs ago

The chairman was put in place 24 hours earlier by the LAGOP bending the rules. Then when the Paul supporters protested, they were told by the GOP corrupts that they had changed the rules and only required a 1/3 quorum to enact their chairman.

2/3s of the room then held a legal vote and voted in Herford and that's when the poor loser called the police and had them beat up Herford. They are saying in this article he was "arrested" but I'm not sure what they could arrest him for. He didn't do anything wrong.

They dragged Herford out of there on a gurney and the rest of the delegates turned their chairs away from the losing chairman and continued on.

"When those rule changes were released to several of the delegates on Friday, they were not in keeping of ideas of liberty and democracy," she said. Ron Paul supporters claim the new delegation rules make selecting delegates for the national convention in Tampa unfair.

"For example, one of the rule changes were that 1/3 of the delegation would constitute a quorum," Barnard said. "Nowhere does any public body or any seated body does 1/3 constitute a quorum."

The minority convention claims otherwise.

"All we're saying is the Republicans of Louisiana are going to know what we did, they are going to accept what we did," Minority Convention Credential Committee Chairman Jeff Giles said. "They're going to say, oh, y'all were being fair. Y'all were making sure Romney got his 5 delegates and Santorum got his 10."

Giles says the rule change was to prevent Ron Paul supporters from stealing Romney and Santorum delegates.

"We just tightened up the rules. We made it more responsible so that delegates for those candidates would be elected," he said. "Instead of Ron Paul people posing as supporters of those candidates."

FREAKING eat your BS flag one man was not justr a delegate.

I didnt say anything about delegates just that it was one person who sustained minor injuries while being restrained for refusing to leave, rather than 2 people as the thread title is trying to make out.

Sheldon, there was NO justification for him to be asked to leave.
