| OhYeah (OP) User ID: 1077811 06/06/2012 10:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sounds like the throttle cable is frayed and is starting to jam in its sheath. Hope it doesn't stick open! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1305614 Thanks. Actually once 3 years back I started the car and suddenly it kept engine accellerating, while in P. It was going 4k rpm and wouln'nt quit, so I just waited and waited and the revs returned to normal after 5 minutes and just drove away. I'll just jam it in N if the thing loses control. Any other opinions? OhYeah |

Get someone to press pedal up and down whilst you look under the bonnet at what parts are moving. There will be a filter assembly over the carb which you can either unclip and/or then unbolt to reveal the butterfly in the carb. The butterfly is a circular disk which moves vertical and horizontal. With engine off squirt a whole load of WD40 around the butterfly hinges inside the carb. Also look in the footwell and check linkages for clearance. |

Yep, well I can reveal that the mobile mechanic said the reason is it needs a carb rebuild, but that will cos $$$, more than the car is worth, so I was wondering if its anything else. Cos these guys do not always know their sheet. OhYeah |

If you're going to drive around in an old shitbox, you'll have to learn to be a bit of a mobile mechanic, yourself. |

I don't think it's a shitbox, it's a lot more fun to drive than new cars which lack soul and are designed to be boring cushionmobiles. It's reliable otherwise and rough and ready. New cars are teh real shitboxes cos they are finished in 5 years. |
| dave User ID: 1449133 06/06/2012 10:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As you've now added that you've had a stuck accelerator situation - this is definitely a frayed cable. You need to replace the cable. It's an easy and cheap job to do yourself. Just go down Repco and they'll most likely have the cable in stock. You replace both the outer sheath and inner cable as one. You need to know that if you lift off the accelerator and hit the break even relatively lightly and the accelerator is jammed on, you WILL spin the car and more than likely end up being hit by traffic going in the opposite direction. This turns a 60K accident into a headon 120K accident due to the combined speeds of both cars. Do you really want to be responsible for killing say a guys family wife and children ?? $80 or much less on ebay vs you killking a family and/or living in a wheel chair...... |

I'd rather it was just something which goes away by itself. Sometimes lubemobile says they can't diagnose the fault so just don't worry about it. OhYeah |

Any other opinions? Duh, get it fixed. This is not an expensive fix. Alternative: don't get it fixed, complain on internet conspiracy forum, and possibly kill an entire family because you couldn't control the acceleration and rammed their car in an intersection going 80 mph. |
