Re: How to get rid of fleas in carpet?
I have 2 dogs, and one of them got fleas from somewhere. Moved the dogs to another room. Used up 3 foggers, countless times vacuumed, even tried castor oil on newspaper, (didn't do nothing) but a few fleas are still around.

Do any of you have a surefire method to get rid all of them?

I'll give you some advice, if you can afford to do it. If you keep dogs fleas are going to come back even if you get rid of them for sometime. Get rid of the carpet and get wood or laminate flooring.
Don't allow your dogs on the furniture or keep the furniture dust with that earth stuff. I am speaking from experience. I hate fleas and roaches!

Get some Brewers Yeast w/Garlic. Sprinkle it in the dog food religiously every time you feed them forever, and you should NEVER have a problem w/fleas again...

Place a white bowl full of soapy water in every room with nightlights above the bowls. The fleas attract to the light, miss then fall into the soapy water to drown.
(Place next to outlet.) Do this before anything else. It helps when your waiting. Trust me.
One more thing: They love the color white. (Check your socks).

I had the same problem years back, I had to bathe and use advantage on my pets to get rid of their fleas. Then I ripped out all my carpets, used pine sol to thoroughly clean my floors then reinstall my carpets. I now use diatomaceous earth to keep the fleas away.

Like they already said BORAX, and sprinkle some outside too, there are fleas out there in the yard/walking places too. It really does work quickly.

Re: How to get rid of fleas in carpet?
Fleas seek the warmth of a body, so take an old lamp and lean it over a bowl of soapy water.

Take off the lampshade before you do this.

Bowl of water on the carpet, bare bulb over the bowl, try to make it so the bulb is about 3-5 inches above the water.

Do this at night when all lights in the house are out.

The way it works is the fleas are drawn to the heat of the bulb and when they try to jump onto it, they bounce off into the water and drown.

Old country remedy.

Try feeding garlic cloves to your dogs also, makes 'em taste bad to fleas.

Winner.

We used to fill a white bowl with water, set it in the middle of the floor and point a lamp down at it. Before you know it you have a bowl full of dead fleas.

Re: How to get rid of fleas in carpet?
Ok after you fail with borax (Which will repell the fleas away from where you place it) Buy a product called Precor. Read the label instructions carefully before applying, it's an igr so it will inhibit growth. Pyrethroids will kill the adults, nymphs, and possibly a few eggs. You need to agitate the eggs to encourage them to hatch, so vac twice a day for a week minimum, use your vac until you can't stand seeing it.

I have a masters insecticide applicators license, so I have some experience.

Also treat your dog with whatever the vet says, I don't know much about that end of things.

You'll have to lay, naked on the carpet, and let the fleas feast on your blood. Let the think they have won, and then, place an m-95 gas mask on, and lay place flea foggers on your genital area, your navel, and your forehead. Set them all off and sleep there that night.

Re: How to get rid of fleas in carpet?
It is a seriously tedious process.

Get some Diatomaceous Earth from a feed store, Home Depot, or Walmart, or online. Be sure you get FOOD GRADE (sometimes referred to as human grade). Do NOT use the kind that is processed for pool filters as that can be very dangerous.

Sprinkle the diatomaceous earth powder around your home. It is very fine and fluffy and it's not good to breathe it in too much as it could irritate the lungs. It kills all insects including roaches, fleas, and bedbugs. Don't get any near your fish tank, not good for fish. Perfectly safe for mammals. Suggest you google on the process, I'm too tired to go into all the details. But it does work. Dam those fleas!

Another trick I came across is to wash your pets in a mild solution of water and white vinegar. The fleas don't like the vinegar smell. Worked great with my cats...

Not tried it yet but I have heard that if you put an ounce of white vinegar into the pets drinking water it helps to kill off the fleas when the bite into your pet....

The vet gave me an aerosole can of something that I sprayed anywhere the cat slept. Same as you, vaccumed until I was going to puke. I put a flea collar in the vaccum too, the Frontline applied to the cat pretty much killed her though, I hate the shit. Have a dog now and am afraid to use it anymore, used it last fall and she got lethargic, ill looking, lost her appetite. Some of these suggestins have been helpful. So sorry for your bad luck, flea infestation is TRAUMATIZING

Salt. Sprinkle salt on carpet. Vacuum it up after about 24 hours. If it's humid and melts - sprinkle carpet with baking soda and vacuum it up.

No fleas and cleanest carpet ever (with the baking soda).

Long story how I learned this - but it worked chuckle
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15791612

Yup..vacuum first then sprinkle salt on the carpet before bed time and repeat process each day for a few weeks...It works..or call the bug guys to come in ..the salt remedy is much cheaper.

I bought this rug powder that I found in the pet section at Walmart specifically formulated to kill fleas in rugs. You sprinkle it on the rug, let it sit for awhile and vacuum it up. Do that a couple of times a day for at least a week and you should be good. You may see them back again if you missed any eggs in the carpet but another round with the powder will do it. Great stuff. good luck!

What you have to do is bomb your house. The flea bombs that they sell- get yourself and the animals out of the house for an hour or 2, then you can come back in. Make sure you leave the windows open as well to vent. Then vacuum the rug

Sprinkle "Baking Soda" on the carpet. It will take about a week, but all the fleas will die because the fleas are anti aerobic and the Baking Soda attaches to their shells and eats through them. Also does the same for their eggs.

Re: How to get rid of fleas in carpet?
OP,

Some of the people here have it half right. Sprinkle Boriac Acid (its in a powder form) all over your carpet. But DON'T VAC it up every day! Leave it for one week THEN VAC it up really good. The way B.A. works is it scratches the flea shell as they travel across the carpet and they dehydrate and die.

All the powder is kind of messy and some of it can it airborne but its the best way to kill the damn things.

Also, treat you dogs for fleas on a regular basis. Mine usually get fleas from the vet. I hate taking them there.
