Ft Calhoun is still shut down - will be until September (still too soon, IMO). I live directly down wind - and have a rad meter running 24/7 that alerts at 40 cpm (low, I know) - and it has not went off for over a year. It is not FCal.

I am sorry to say that your area has been exposed to radioactive fallout material, not just simple radiation.

The risks depend on the composition of the material but as far as long-term risks, this is bad. Life on this planet has evolved in an environment with a certain amount of radiation, yes, but almost perfectly clean of radioactive material in the atmosphere.

Alpha emitters do little or no harm outside the body, but are especially harmful inside the body, even tiny specks, if they lodge or concentrate internally.

There is nothing to be done except move, but undoubtedly some of that material is in your lungs, exactly like it is in your air filters. Measuring your chest with a Geiger counter won't tell you much because alpha and beta wont even travel through the flesh out of your lungs, but they will cause DNA mutation in the surrounding cells that those materials are in contact with.

If I remember correctly, the explanation was that the readings were different because Black Cat uses different scaling to post their readings, big deal, just to make them look more independent of each other, both are the same - just spin anyway. Could be as simple as a load of nuclear, radioactive cargo went by - I have heard several reports (all second hand of course) of police shutting down exits in the vicinity, guarding a truck (bunch of black SUV) - flatbed with oblong silver object - who knows, my ex girlfriends daughter thought cessna's were UFO's if you know what I mean, it doesn't hurt to get facts but it sure gets old listening to drivel reported over and over by both sides.

Your handyman is wrong WM, and if he thinks it is because of radon, radon will not trap in an hvac filter because it is a gas. If you have a basement contaminated with radon then that is possible, but you would get that reading from the floor of your basement, not necessarily from your filter unless your filter were on the floor of your basement when you measured.

At least the govt shills are not claiming they have (false low?) data on their meters, either.... just give them time, huh?

Pull out a phone book, look up "laboratory supplies" maybe, and go down Monday morning and buy even the most basic Geiger counter that measures Alpha, Beta, Gamma and X-ray. If you can spend a little more get one that will read those 4 radiations individually.

I hate to tell you this folks, but as long as you are still permitted to purchase or own a Geiger counter, it would be best to not rely on anything or any other persons opinion, but rather on your personal readings concerning any ultimate types of decisions you might make.

The initial signs and symptoms of treatable radiation sickness are usually nausea and vomiting. The amount of time between exposure and when these symptoms develop is an indicator of how much radiation a person has absorbed.

After the first round of signs and symptoms, a person with radiation sickness may have a brief period with no apparent illness, followed by the onset of new, more serious symptoms.

I assure you it is a real condition. Some of the worst cases seen, the patient feels healthy after the first round of symptoms. But that is a false feeling of well being.

Understand how radiation poisoning works and you will understand why people can feel healthy between stages of symptoms.

Many people did give such reports. On here. On other sites. And they said there was nothing. And you ignored them, fucktard.

That may be true with chronic radiation exposure but this isn't chronic.

Update: 6/7/12, 7:45 A.M: - False Alert: The alert level reading last evening appears to be a false alert from an equipment malfunction. Here is the station's report:

"out of control readings on the GeigerGraph screen from about 11:30pm local time that occurred while sleeping. My apologies to all. I have no idea what caused this. Shut down GeigerGraph and restarted. Readings from the Geiger were in the normal range (the Geiger operates on A/C). All cable connections are tight and not loose. Am speculating between the GFI and USB Adapter and some sort of voltage spikes. The uninterruptable power supply UPS had lost power and had died - a tripped GFI. I am not going to leave the system running while not at home until I can determine and fix the problem."

By the way, a handful of stations on the Radiation Network feed simultaneously to the Black Cat Systems network, which explains why a high reading was showing on their network at the same time. But Black Cat works in uR/hr instead of CPM, so their radiation level was lower because of the conversion factor between units of measurement.

My Gamma Scout is giving readings on background Cesium-137 that are higher than a few months ago but still within the normal range.

By normal range I am going with what was defined as normal where the product was made.....Germany. Their normal background is 0.100 to 0.200 uSv/hour.


Over the past 30 minutes I have watched the Scout. It gives a reading every one second. The range has been from 0.050 to 0.225. Most of the readings have been between 0.120 and 0.170.


The average over the past 24 hours has been: 0.140 uSv/h


I am a beginner at this.....but still felt that I should report this information.
