A few sailors died on a ship that was in a war zone and was not indirect communication with the Israeli government. The Captain received a letter of reprimand for his stupid behavior and the United States apologized to Israel for our stupidity. The ship should never have been in the war zone waters sailing up the coast from Egypt when the Egyptians were attacking Israel. Not just stupidity on the part of the American Captain, but GROSS STUPIDITY!

That was not a positive ID. I have listened to the recording. The Pilot "Thought" the flag might be American. The IDF radioed on American standard radio frequencies for the ship to identify itself and there was no answer so the IDF figured that it was Egyptian and decided to incapacitate the vessel.

I am a Sailor, and I know damage control. The USS Liberty didn't sink because Israel stopped attacking. If they'd kept at it, she would have sunk, no doubt about it. As it was, yes, the actions of the crew kept the ship afloat.

Hell yes, it concerns me! However, my problem is that people are characterizing the attack as a bunch of Israelis saying, "Hey, let's go kill some innocent people, just because we're so evil!" Sorry, but no. No one has that as their motivation, no one. LBJ didn't want a war with Israel, so the incident, whatever its cause, was swept under the rug. An apology from Israel would have been better.
