What were you taught about employment references, and when?

Good luck getting anything beyond "yes, they worked here" or no, they didn't work here" and "they are (or aren't) subject to rehire".

That's it. If you get any more info then that, you should be shocked.

That's "verification of employment" - not the same thing. What I want to know about are the people who you have asked to be a reference for you when you apply to jobs. When and what were you taught about that? - the why and wherefore

You want good references?

- Don't talk about what you dont know
- Try to be better everyday
- Don't put up with shit even with your bosses, but always be polite
- Draw your path, a company is just a platform to go higher, don't get attached and dont be affraid of unemployement, you know what you worth
- While employed be loyal, productive and a teamplayer

I haven't needed "references" since the 80's....seriously.

find a business that failed and use that as a reference but you just so happen to have the old ownder's cell number still. aka you have a trac phone labeled as that person, answer the phone, pretend that you're busy and then say "ya i remember him, good worker, cant remember too mucha bout him though sorry".

When I worked for temp agencies, they were adamant that you have references if you wanted them to get you positions.

That will not impress anyone who calls. In fact, it is almost certainly going to result in your application being sent to the circular file.

Yes, you can get a job without references - but you won't get a good one.
Employers that insist on references are concerned about "douchebag control" - overconfident applicants who think they shit marble. Hiring such people ensures a miserable work environment, because they have little or no humility.
Before the Internet era, one could get away with listing "personal" references on applications, if it was early in your career and you had no significant work experience.
That is all over with.
Now, employers demand references only from previous supervisors - they want to ensure that you are a good subordinate, are bondable, and get along well with others.

People that follow the rules win the trust of their employers, and are likely to enjoy trouble-free employment. If you think, on the other hand, that certain rules do not apply to you, you may find yourself unemployed again sooner than you think.

most of these sleezy, hr run-amock companies will give you nothing for a reference. I have used my skillz as the reference.

Give them references that are really your family...sister, brother, mom, etc. But don't tell the company you are related. BOOM! DONE.

I state on my resume that references can be made up amd peoe use friends as references all tje time. I go on to say you have 3 months to legally fire me without cause. Give me a chance to show what a valuable asset i can be to your organization.

Oh and i print me resume on brigjt green 10 point stock. No highschool amd got a job at bell canada with this style. I have mozy if an emplyer doesn't like it tbey arent a good fit for me.

I only give references during interviews and usually make a note that says "references furnished upon request" I just don't feel comfortable throwing their names and numbers around on every application I fill out. I don't fill out my social security number on applications either.

You keep in touch with your references. Don't use them like a commodity. If you use them, call so they know to expect the company to call. Be 100% certain they will provide only the strongest recommendation. Otherwise, you'll be surprised. Have them write out a letter of recommendation you can hand to the employer. Give them the job description and offer examples of how you excelled in every qualification.

Everybody is always bitching about jobs. I was trying to apply during unemployment just to keep my unemployment and often the site would show how many people had applied. It was like hundreds. And I'm like, this is fucked.

So, I decided to start a business. Crazy thing is, at the courthouse to file my business, there was no line. There was not a single person there to open a business. This was in Houston, downtown. Not a single person besides myself.

HR is the feminized approach to business now and it is disgusting. I had a relative in HR back in the day and he was a dude negotiating with union dudes....he had an actual job.

I'm an old timer, so I have no idea how this is done now. I can tell you how it used to be 30 to 50 years ago.

Employers might ask for two types of references, definitely employment references, but they might want personal references too. Personal references were made available upon request.

The best thing to have as an employment reference was a glowing letter of recommendation from a previous boss.

As for personal references, you could not list a family member, but anyone else was fine. Ideal personal references would be your pastor, a teacher, a coach, any pillar of the community, someone successful and/or respected. You would never use someone as a personal reference without asking them first.

They don't care about letters of recommendation anymore; they insist that you provide them with the phone # and email address of your reference, so that they can communicate with them personally, and ask them specific questions.

LinkedIn is very good for jobs theses days.

You can get recommendations from people on there.

When you leave a job and you get on well with any of the managers, keep in touch with them.
