Syrian rebels tried to get me killed to show up the regime: Channel 4 news reporter says he was 'deliberately set up to be shot'


A senior British journalist claims that Syrian rebels tried to lead him and his colleagues into a trap so they would be killed by government forces, to discredit the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Channel 4 News chief correspondent Alex Thomson said a group from the Free Syrian Army led his team into the line of fire because ‘dead journos are bad for Damascus’.

He said his vehicle was shot at before the team managed to ‘floor it back to the road we’d been led in on’.

He wrote: ‘Suddenly four men in a black car beckon us to follow. We move out behind. We are led another route. Led in fact, straight into a free-fire zone. Told by the Free Syrian Army to follow a road that was blocked off in the middle of no-man’s land.

'At that point there was the crack of a bullet and one of the slower three-point turns I’ve experienced. We screamed off into the nearest side-street for cover. Another dead-end. There was no option but to drive back out on to the sniping ground and floor it back to the road we’d been led in on.

‘Predictably the black car was there which had led us to the trap. They roared off as soon as we re-appeared.

‘I’m quite clear the rebels deliberately set us up to be shot by the Syrian army. Dead journos are bad for Damascus.’

His comments on the Channel 4 website came as clashes were reported near the centre of the Syrian capital, while UN monitors finally

This is great. Unfortunately since it's not reported by the arbiter of all truth (the BBC) nobody will pay much attention. I know channel 4 is credible, but isn't internationally recognized enough for this story to last long or reach enough ears.

No, it’s a war. Both sides are responsible. I think the Western media is rather naïve because they constantly blame the Syrian army for killing civilians. That’s true because the Syrian army are to blame for shelling civilians, but it’s equally true that the Free Syrian Army is very largely fighting its war in built-up, populated, civilian areas. They're not exactly using civilians as human shields but if you fight in those areas, civilians are going to be killed, and that is a question which is not put to the leaders of the Free Syrian Army with the frequency that it should be, in my opinion

Most people probably don't remember when the Israelis, probably led by Sharon, pushed the PLO into a few square blocks of civilian highrise-type apartments in Beirut back in '82 or so.

The PLO hid like rats, shielded by civilians. Kissinger or somebody of his ilk worked out a deal to let them escape, and they came out of the woodwork like a bunch of victorious "warriors," shooting their guns off into the sky, which is about the only target they could actually hit.

The Israelis could have incinerated every last one of them, but didn't. That's not how they operate, the Israelis.

Of course, it WAS a great political victory for the PLO, who went on to blow up hundreds of Israelis AND Palestinians in suicide bombings in subsequent years.
