Best survival stove for when TSHTF

Why cook anything? The zombies aren't bothering to cook their meals and that seems to be working out.

How much do they want for that little thing?Damn dude you can build your own rocket stove out of any thing in about 10 minutes.

Any stove that uses the abundant dried out zombies for fuel.....

That's really cool, but up here we use stoves to provide warmth as well as heating food and water.

I'll stick with my Yukon-M1950

Nice stove I used one like that when I was stationed in Alaska but the biolite is portable and light easy to carry

the thermoelectric generator is pretty cool

The one I have is a little old but does me fine when I am out and about.

Served me well in other lands as well, even got the thing to work at a fairly high altitude and freezing conditions once.

If the time came that I cannot find anymore fuel to burn with it I will just use a normal fire.

Anyway, I live in England, so if TSHTF I only have a few places to go, not that many remote places left over here.

I don't understand why that is a benefit wtshtf.
I see this as a novelty item for weekend urban campers.
Cell phones, ipads, really? I don't see any use for those items wtshtf.

I see great benefit in this. Imagine putting your whole SHTF library on a Nook Touch. All 40 years of Mother Earth News, all your field guides to edible wild plants, your 12 volumes of Foxfire... But even with a 2 month battery life that Nook is eventually going to run out of go-juice.

For packing too Heavy at 2# and if you are stealth camping
wood smoke is a dead give away. If not worried about the smoke its pretty simple to build a small cooking fire, dakota hole or whatever without having to haul around a wood burning stove.

Yep, wood smoke is a major problem.

But there are ways of putting together a fire that keeps the smoke to a minimum (directs it into the ground etc.)

The only problems with these methods are that 1: It can take a little time to constuct and is probably better suited for a longer period than a one day stay, so not good if you have to keep on the move and 2: No matter how clever the construction, the smell of smoke is obvious (the smell of cooking food too.)

I have to get one, but I'm pretty sure I'll destroy a phone or two with boiling water.

I just ordered one, thank you. My intuition said this was an excellent idea. I'm thinking more along the lines of a solar flare where the grid goes down for some amount of time. Could heat a can of soup/beans/meat/veggies/coffee out of a handful of twigs. Very economical, a fire would require ALOT more wood. Plus like the person said above, you could charge your ipad with all your survival stuff on it.

Just had a quick look at the HomeStove (c) description page. Besides being supported by US government agencies listed in the bottom the price of reducing CO2 emission by 1 metric ton is listed as $ 6,66/ Go figure, so what they do is all nice and such, but it's a "demonic device". DooM on! :P

Hey, thanks for sharing! Do you actually own one? If so, how well does it work? How long does it have to burn before it generates enough power to charge something? How long does it generally take to fully charge a cellphone, and how long does it burn if you were to full it to it's capacity with twigs. Thanks!

it starts charging as soon as you have heat 2 min tops I use it to charge my led flashlight and rechargeable batteries I think I will get a nook and keep survival manuals on it

OP: Are you THAT short-sighted? When TSHTF... where do you think you'll find the power to charge through a USB? The IDEA is to find a stove -or means of cooking- when the entire grid collapses.

I have a dual-burner propane model [still not a GOOD choice, since the propane will eventually run out], a charcoal grille, several foil buffet trays [that use canned, gelled Alcohol -aka Sterno- these are the cheapest and easiest to find, BTW] and finally, I bought an old-fashioned cast-iron HIBACHI [like we used back in the 1970's at the beach]... it fits very neatly inside my fireplace and cooks quite well.

MY ADVICE? RE-EVALUATE your personal needs and think a little further ahead when you have abslutely NO backup resources.

Sorry... I misunderstood... the stove actually charges throug a USB port. SO, in the sense of accessing a vast library of survaval info it would be a handy device. BUT: anybody who has to rely solely on such stored info is already at a BIG-ASSED disadvantage to someone who has already mastered basic survival skills.

TRUST ME: a Military [or even a Boy Scout] manual is far cheaper than $129.

Yep, cold food is probably the way to go for a BOB IMO.
You will survive although I would miss my coffee in the morning - LOL.

There is a guy over on BPL that did a SUL thru on the AT for 6 months cold food. I think his base back weight was about 9# or so. He did it to save weight.

Yes a dakota hole will produce less smoke but it takes time. It is almost like a wood gas stove which is similar to this stove but I guess this is more like a zip stove.

If they had a titanium model and it weighed like 1# which is doable I would be in, as the USB charger is a nice idea.

A wood gas stove is pretty easy to make and I am sure the thermo charger unit is off the shelf from somewhere. Great Idea though.

The home unit looks like a good idea for the farm where my parents live. They are out in the sticks with plenty of wood around.
