It appears this was supposed to be the "big push". Something like 800-1000 rebels attempted to seize control of Damascus and some of the neighboring cities. The number seems to vary greatly from source to source. The rebels had some success in securing neighborhoods and attacking Syrian army locations, but didn't appear to hold any ground. The Syrian army is out in force, blockading and shelling neighborhoods in cities the attacks originated from. Overall, not a good day for the rebels. If Sky News is correct in their assessment of rebel losses, this might have been a disastrous attack for the already undermanned FSA. But it's always hard to assess the strength of guerrilla forces. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11145700 i wouldnt be so hasty. it is only the beginning. quatari saudi, kuwaiti and even pakistani fighters are currentlig either flocking or waiting to get to syria for support of the fsa. things will heat up the next few days and russia will back off. Russia is the only nation that could openly send their forces, and publicly supply them. All to protect the lives of their 100,000 citizens living in their ally's nation. This is almost a repeat of the 8/8/8 situation. NATO, the CIA, and Saudi Arabia also shouldn't be there, but that isn't stopping them. |

[link to www.youtube.com] God the opposition have the worst propaganda titles for their videos. The Syrian Army wasn't shooting at the UN, they were firing into a rebel controlled town down in the valley. The observers were in little danger, they just exited their vehicles to find hard cover to avoid any stray bullets and probably see what was actually happening. Maybe if there were shots bouncing around in that video I'd be convinced the UN were actually being targeted. |

"Many" rebels were captured or killed during the 800 man strong coordinated attack. This was just one big push using what resources they had gather over the last few months during the ceasefire. If nothing happens tomorrow, the rebels might have just lost any edge they have had. Then it's back to the Turkish and Lebanese boarders for them if they don't get routed first. Apparently the Syrian Army is out in force tonight. |
