Also if the horse doesn't make money animore? Don't they put it down like the dogs in fucking Spain? Not THAT horse!!! He won all 12 races he'd raced in, including the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. As heartbreaking as it was not to go for the Triple Crown (which hadn't been won since 1978) his owners did the right thing pulling him from the Belmont. I think I heard a news reporter say that his stud fee will be in the neighborhood of $30,000. But if he'd raced, and broken down like we saw happen to Barbaro, he might have had to be put down right then. And they'd have nothing. I agree with you though, unfortunately for a lot of race horses which are not successful, it IS a one-way trip to the processors. Especially now, when hay and grain are becoming so expensive. Also, Vet care, horseshoeing, grooming supplies, stable help, EVERYTHING is more and more expensive. Here in Oregon there have been several sad cases of starving horses, not because their owners didn't love them but because their owners couldn't afford to pay the skyrocketing feed bills. It's almost as if they loved them TOO much, instead of trying to find them a home or sell them when the situation began to go downhill.
