Family reported fire, watched it smolder for hours

LARIMER COUNTY - 9Wants to Know has obtained dramatic new photos of the High Park Fire smoldering and then exploding out of control Saturday morning.

A family camping in the area where the fire started claims they called 911 hours before they saw help arrive.

...

Cindi Johnson snapped her first photo of the fire at 9:31 a.m., more than three-and-a-half hours after the first 911 call.

"'Where are they?' That was the only thing I was thinking is' where are they?' It just kept growing," Cindi Johnson said.

...

"Oh, it was just horrible. It could have been prevented, I think. Just how long we sat there and watched nothing happen. It kills me. It really does. It's just very heart wrenching to think of that," Cindi Johnson said.

If that's the case, that's sick. If it was just negligence it's still sick.

The fire we had over at Conifer that killed people involved negligence. It's amazing more people didn't die there too. One guy called and they told him he didn't have to evacuate and the woman was hateful and told the guy to quit calling even though he lived right there. After a couple of pissy calls he evacuated... through flames... after being told he didn't need to evacuate. His neighbors died. Then again, I wouldn't call, I would get the hell out ahead, but they had no idea how close it was so he says.

Doesn't sound like it's an easy area to get to if it took 4 hours for the first plane drop...

Are there normally planes on standby ready for flight right away?

I mean we couldn't even scramble fighter jets to stop the 911 planes...and they expect a wild fire in a remote location to be put out asap?

Sounds unrealistic.

You know, I've wondered that myself lately. The way they have "managed" it, it makes one wonder. They have made damn sure there is fuel for any fire with their "management".

Actually we scrambled the planes on 9/11 just fine. It's the fact that we mysteriously picked that morning to scramble all the planes for an Atlantic exercise that was interesting.

By air, the grade doesn't matter. Also, the news articles make it sound much worse than it is. There are people all over up there and I guarantee it does not take 5 hours to get emergency services up there. Alaska maybe I don't know, here, no.

I was close to a wildfire starting in California. We made the call, and started loading up vehicles to evacuate. Helicopters and firebombers where making runs within 15 minutes. As we left CDF was coming in on the roads. Fire was knocked down before it got out of hand. Luckily it was a low wind day, but was very hot and dry.

A firebomber could fly half way across the US in 3 hours.

This story is...

bsflag

Allow me to explain why...

THERE ARE OVER 44,000 ACRES OF LAND CURRENTLY BURNING NEAR THIS AREA. I rarely make excuses for law/fire and government departments, as I seriously dislike them...

BUT...

They have ALL available man power doing all they can to contain these wildfires and stop them from spreading and reaching more populated areas. In addition, many other workers are busy organizing evacuations by making phone calls, knocking on doors, and keeping local news stations and web sites updated.

It's all hands on deck in that area. This may turn out to be the largest wildfire in Colorado state history, as it is only 5% contained and continuing to spread.

For once, give the fire staff a break here... they are BUSY
getting there asses handed to them by Mother Nature.

Only time will tell. Oh, don't get me wrong, I never once thought it would be a problem with the firemen themselves. I live up here! Our firemen rock! As with the example I gave above, IF what the people in the article say is true, it would have been a problem somewhere in the administration of this fire, as with 911. I pray the people that reported a 5 HOUR wait time just misunderstood what was going on. I live up here, I know it doesn't take them that long.

Re: Family reported fire, watched it smolder for hours
With nothing but praise for Colorado's "High Park" fire fighters, there remain questions regarding the fire's origins and terrible emergency response. During this June drought, Colorado was on wildfire alert. It was a clear morning with rich blue sky (an unusual lack of chemtrails) and the early wind was calm - perfect visibility for 10's of miles. Later the authorities would say that the conflagration started from a smoldering tree struck by lightning on Wednesday as they received official notification at 5:55 a.m. on Saturday morning when the fire was still quite small.

- Human life and many millions in property damage could have been spared with a timely air drop.

- Whipping wind makes fire a devil to fight and it seems that the system waited several HOURS for the devil to arrive.

- Why would 9News retract the most revealing quote from the article below?

- How could this fire have smoldered for days without detection?

- If TPTB had not waited, there would be NO story! Who benefits from a spectacular, blazing actor arriving unannounced in high definition. If you're in media, fire is a great bargain as global media generated dollars soon dwarf the cost of the fire. And classifying it as Type 1 brings in Federal control.

- Agenda 21 implemented with a match?

- Future taxes and insurance increases are insured.

- Authorities, authorities, and authorities thrive.

- Wouldn't it be a slam dunk to use drones appropriately for heat detection with GPS coordinated, pilotless air drops?

What they witnessed Saturday is devastating for the Johnsons, who watched the fire grow from a puff of smoke into an inferno.

5 mins after the plane , the flames exploded into a huge fire.

They must have dumped some fuel waste on it.

Firefighting is not a spectator sport. Once the family was prepared to evacuate and had a safe evacuation route, they should be fighting the fire, not just waiting for help.

We need to take things into our own hands - and stop waiting for "professionals" to do things for us. That's what's wrong with the USA. All "professionals" are in short supply.

Most firefighting is drudge work - picks, shovels, and water if you have it.

there you go.
I was thinking that standing around watching and taking pictures was not going to help put the fire out. It's kindo dangerous, and alot of the things to do to put it out would require breaking the law and rules of the area where it is, by doing things otherwise destructive to contain it, and if you fucked it up somehow, a little hanged man in an italian suit with a briefcase would show up and slap a lawsuit or criminal charge on you, so theres only a limited amount you could do. Maybe best thing would be to alet the locals, at least they might have a vested intrest in their own assets, and might have influence in getting responders or just get them to act in taking the fire down.
It may however help tyo document the incident and spread the word, to raise awareness and provoke a quicker response if you can display inept reaction by those whos duty it was, and the job they get paid for that they failed.

Re: Family reported fire, watched it smolder for hours
If its anything like where i live, in a grass/woods situation fire personnel are dispatched to the area, if needed they get forestry enroute. Forestry will then cut breaks around it if possible or call in more advanced methods (planes, etc.). add the time it takes to get fire personnel in the area, then the same, plus some, for forestry and then any further response units and it really does take some time to coordinate these kind of things.
