There is something primeval - primal - about all of this.

The gods of old were explanations for natural forces, forces of which we seem to have forgotten. Through interaction with the "gods", it appears that we are now being re-introduced to what we forgot.

This may be the meaning of the title, "the return of the gods"; the return of ancient understandings.

I also think that these "gods" were introduced to the Egyptians by much older, wiser and knowledgeable civilizations. We may very well be walking a path similar to the ancient Egyptians, wherein they, too, forgot and were taught to remember.
