Sports fans, I have a ? for you.
I am always interested in why people like the teams they do. I understand it often is very geographical, but other times there is more of a story to it.

Non sports fans, no need to hate, just do not read this thread if you are not interested.

I'll start. I like a wide variety of teams for different reasons.

NFL - I like the Falcons. I was obsessed with the Bills as a little kid (was born in northern PA), I love Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Don Beebe etc. But when those damn Bills traded Thomas to the Dolphins rather than let him retire a Bill, I was devastated. Even as a little kid I hated the business aspect of sports. This caused me to HATE the NFL for a few years, lol. I was however a Va-Tech fan (I grew up outside of DC in NOVA). I loved watching Mike Vick play, he was so exciting, and when he got drafted by the Falcons I started paying attention to them. His rookie year their training camp was held at Furman University in SC, and my aunt and cousin live in Grenville. My family was down there visiting and my dad, brother and myself went to their camp to watch and get some autographs. This was a few years after the dirty birds, so they still had good players like Anderson and were coached by Dan Reeves. I got sooo many autographs and the players were very nice. This caused me to start liking them as a team which later evolved into them being my favorite. To this day I remain a loyal Falcons fan and still love watching Mike Vick play, even though I despise the Eags. (I live in PA)

NBA- LAkers. Lol, I was a huge Shaq fan as a little kid and when he was traded to LA I still liked the Magic, but that all changed when Kobe was drafted. I loved reading about him when he played in high school, and knew he would be great. When the Lakers ended up having both of my favorite players they became my favorite team. I will NEVER switch teams for a player now, but I thought differently as a kid. I love the LAkers to this day.

MLB- The Chicago White Sox. When I was a little tyke and began collecting sports cards, one of my favorite and most valuable cards was a Frank Thomas insert of some sort. This led to him becoming my favorite player and Chi town becoming my favorite team, which they remain today.

NCAA football- As I stated I was raised in Northern VA, this one was a regional thing I guess.

NCAA basketball- Georgetown, same as above. I still love both of those teams to this day.

I guess I love watching athletes that are exciting and fun to watch, hence Vick, Kobe, Floyd Money-man Mayweather, Mike Tyson, Andy Roddick (Serves so fast!) Vitor Belfort (BJJ black belt with CRAZY FAST HANDS!!) and Ken Shamrock in MMA, etc. This played a part with me choosing the teams I did when I was young, and loving the teams I do to this day.

So anyone else have interesting reasons for being a fan of the teams you love?

I know most people do not give a shit about this, so sorry if you clicked, lol. I just enjoy knowing how people think and why they like things they do and often ask people why they like the teams they do. So bump in case someone else thinks like this as well, or has a sweet story explaining why they love certain teams.

Gotya! I can't wait until next season. They just didn't have their offense together this year, especially acquiring a new pg so late. They could have been much better. Oh well, they will be better next year and Kobe will get his 6th!

I grew up in the northeast, but was a Chisox and KC Chiefs fan. I stopped watching games on TV about 4 years ago when I realized this is all about maintaining a divide and conquer mentality, e.g. my tribe vs. your tribe. Occasionally, I'll check to see how those teams are doing and I still play fantasy football, but it's not the same feeling as it was before.

If you're not a Bills fan now you were never one to begin with. We are easily the most passionate fans in the NFL. Finally this year we may have a playoff worthy team. Best talent we have had since 03 and the softest schedule we have had in a long time.

I grew up in a small town in Ohio almost equidistant from Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Back then the Browns were good and the Steelers sucked (yes, I grew up a long time ago), but the Pirates were good and the Indians sucked. Most people in my town were Browns and Pirates fans. I was influenced by the best players of the time, so I liked Jim Brown, Willie Mays, and Bill Russell. I am a Browns, Giants, and Celtics fan.

Mine seem a bit random. I'm from near Nottingham, but support Sheffield Wednesday in soccer. In american football I support the Dolphins, not really sure why to be honest.

Lol, yes I stopped being a fan of them when I was like 5 and I already explained why. If that was over your head, sorry. Also, good luck. You have the Pats in your division, so you may make a wild card? Doubt it.

Cincinnati Reds- Geographical, plus my grandparents lived in Northern KY when I was a kid, and they would take me to games.

Cincinnati Bengals- Geographical (obviously)

THE Ohio State Buckeyes- Geographical

Just grew up following the local teams, now I'm a hardcore fan.

Re: Sports fans, I have a ? for you.
I liked the Chicago White Sox, not the Cubs.

At 11 years old I was off to my 1st Ball game, a Sox game.
We got there to find out it was cancelled because "Disco Demolition"
wrecked the field the night before at Commisky Park.

The next week, a friend and myself ditched school
and took the L down to Wrigley field.
We sneaked in about the 3rd inning.

As we were running up the ramps we saw two topless women walking down the ramp. That was the first 4 breasts I had ever seen in real life. I've been a Cubs fan ever since. ;-`)

Good reason!

Comiskey was the first stadium I ever went to see a game outside of Cincinnati. It was the 4th of July, they had an awesome firework show.

It's like you said, geographical, but also it's whatever players you see in action and like for whatever reason. For example I'm a Raiders fan just because of Bo Jackson. Over the years they have sucked, but I still find myself cheering for them.

I like Notre Dame for college football just because my older brother and our friends liked them. Part of it is also parental/family/peer influence.

Baseball I like the Blue Jays because they're the only Canadian team.

Basketball I go for whoever is playing against the Heat. lol
Actually I love the Bulls because of the Jordan era, and now I like Derrick Rose.

Hockey I go for the Canucks because I live in Vancouver.

So yea, I guess its a big combination of geography, preferred players and family and friends influence, at least in my case.

Re: Sports fans, I have a ? for you.
I was born in VA and my family raised me a deadskins fan (through thick and thin, mostly thick). at least we have RG3 now. I now live in carolina and enjoy watching the panthers (it works out since the two teams are in different conferences) my sis went to Appalachain State and we use to go watch the games and Armanti Edwards play and he now plays for carolina.

Im a Va-Tech fan myself, almost all of my family went there. too bad outta state tuition is through the roof. but they are my college team.

Baseball is Yankees. My dad and his side of the family was born in NY so i was just raised a yankee fan.

im not a big NBA fan but i like the OKC thunder. They have been down in the dumps so long (in seattle) its good to see a team make a come back. Durant is a class act too. However i wouldnt mind seeing the HEAT win just so ppl will shutup about them getting the ring and things can go back to normal.

i enjoy the chat during the game last night too btw, see you thursday. Bosh will make game winning 3.

I think it always boils down to three reasons.

Geography
The best team/person
The underdog due to a likability factor

For me personally (but I only watch MMA) it is all about the likability factor. Skills are of course important as well but it really is primarily the likability factor for me.

If you are a douche (*cough Jon Jones *cough) nozzle, I want to see you lose, no matter how good you are.

Re: Sports fans, I have a ? for you.
NFL - Miami Dolphins and NY Giants. I grew up during the Dan Marino years and had a huge crush on him, hence becoming a Dolphin fan (despite living in NJ). I always liked the Giants too, because they are the local team and are NFC, and therefore not rivals of the Fins (like the dirty Jets) These days, after so many years of disappointment, I'm more of a Giants fan than Dolphins...

NBA/MLB - couldn't care less

NHL - RANGERS! I was never really into hockey, and occasionally rooted for the Devils (I'm in NJ), but my husband is a diehard Ranger fan and he converted me :) Next year we will get the cup!

Oh and we are also HUGE Hershey Bears fans!! My husband grew up in PA and his folks still live there (Caps fans!) so we go to Bears games all the time :)

Yes he is.

But until Jones entered the stage I never realized it was possible to hate someone you see on TV. chuckle

Current favorite is tough one to answer but all time favorite is hands down Fedor Emelianenko. Unfortunately he also has the worst manager of all time.
