I am the proud owner of a Landseer (European Continental Type). Should I get him neutered? or will he be too fat and lazy? | |

Teach this one to 'herd' WITHOUT the grabbing of clothes and hands. :D Not a newfie or Landseer story, but our lab when I was a kid wouldn't let the milkman take a paper towel he had "stolen" from our farm... he had to put it back before he could leave, lol. I'm a cat person now, but I recognize that that's a pretty dog. No more requests in the "Strangest things" thread please. :hf: Past Lives requests thread: Thread: That Which Once Was: Past Lives |

Should I get him neutered? or will he be too fat and lazy? Have had Great Pyrenees and also a Newfoundland. All very sweet, easy to train. The Pyrs have a strong guardian instinct and will flip from sweet Nany to protection mode in seconds if they perceive a threat. These really are remarkable dogs. Never had to do more than give a stern look--they respond strongly to praise. Very regal but friendly, and excellent with children and elderly people. Never any trouble with teething--we offer raw knuckle bones and carrots. The "French" type has a longer nose and very little drooling--the "English" type is shorter nosed, heavier head, and will drool in hot weather. They eat much less than you'd expect, but require lots of fresh water at all times. Ours were all healthy and lived about 12 years. |

The are so loyal and gentle but do have a stubborn streak at times. For instance she will only got outside for very few people unless a day passes. The expression on thier face are just priceless, she is very good with kids. Now that she is older she has hips problems due to her size. If I get another dog was going to put these breeds at the top:):hf: |

Should I get him neutered? or will he be too fat and lazy? Nothing wrong with that, I like the big ones! Did you end up getting him neutered? no, but the window of opportunity is closing. that's why i bumped the thread. still torn. Window of opportunity is closing? What do you mean? Some people wait until after a dog is sexually mature (for the big ones, after 2 years of age) to neuter, so I think you still have plenty of time. There are pros and cons to doing it early/at all. Was the reason you were thinking about him being fat and lazy the motivation to not neuter? |

I have never had anyone who bought my puppies say that their dogs have become lazy after neutering. Every dog is different though, neutering may impact it some but since he's a giant breed, I wouldn't expect him to be overly energetic. He still has a way to go to get out of his puppy stage so you still do have time. |

Should I get him neutered? or will he be too fat and lazy? lol, yes. Mine ruined the sleeves to plenty of my shirts...and loved to shred comforters. I don't recall it lasting all that long though. Check out Kong brand dog toys. They have a web site www.kongcompany.com Most of their products have a place to hide food which might be more tempting to a dog than things they should not be chewing on. These are the closest to being indestructable that dog toys get; the black ones are the strongest.
