I'm thinking it's price gouging.
Think about it.
In the U.S. you have Alaska with it's isolated populations. You have Hawaii and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Prices are higher in these places than the main land 48 but not like the prices in Canada.

Re: Why: Why does a cabbage cost $28 in Canada?
"Prior to the arrival of Europeans, indigenous people in the area survived by hunting, fishing and gathering. But lifestyle changes mean local people are now reliant on imported food. "

It's clear that if they cannot continue their native diet (probably eating seals) it's non sustainable to live there.

Over $5.00 a pound for cabbage, and their income can't be very high, how productive can they be up there where it's so cold?

They'll have to move south if they cannot eat locally available food like seals.

Where are you talking about in Alaska? What does food cost in some place only reachable by Cessna? Most places in Alaska are accessible by road (Fairbanks), sea (Barrow) or both (Anchorage).

Hawaii and PR have great climates to grow food, completely different story.

Nunavut, in northern Canada.

If you had any idea of how difficult it can be to bring in supplies, all done by private transportation companies- you wouldn't be surprised by this.

Roads open only certain times of the year.

Planes chronically damaged by extreme cold.

High fuel prices....

These people need to move closer to the south, and let the Russians take over Nunavut since the Canadian Government is obviously not interested in keeping a presence in the North to exercise our Sovereignty.

That's the price with built in freight, everything is expensive up north due to that. Cabbage takes up room on a plane. LOL

Re: Why: Why does a cabbage cost $28 in Canada?
Not many Inuk I know would eat a cabbage, lol. Or even know what to do with it for that matter.

There used to be a market called Saslove's in Ottawa who would ship orders up to Iqaluit fairly cheap. We would fax in an order in the morning (back when ppl still used fax machines), someone would pack it for pick-up at noon. It would leave Ottawa for Iqaluit on the afternoon flight, ending up on our doorstep before supper. I think shipping was maybe $25 ?

$300 worth of groceries from Saslove's, plus shipping, is still $1200 less than what you would pay if you bought the same stuff in Iqaluit.

That is up in Eskimo Country. They should stick to whale blubber, seal flippers, caribou meat, and fish.

It is their traditional diet and don't cost nothing but time.
