Re: Earthquake Oklahoma Just Felt It!!!
Thank you for all of the kind replies.

Remember that we are inland, away from any major fault zones, and for some reason earthquakes east of the Rockie Mountains are shallower than California quakes, and are "felt" much more intensely.

So a 2.5 may seem like nothing to someone accustomed to California or other major fault zone quakes, but to someone in our geography they feel like a major jolt.

I ran outside immediately when it happened, and all of the local birds where squawking and screeching as they took flight.

For what it is worth, bird behaviour had been normal right up until the quake.

no they don't. you've lost all credibility there. cali has it's share of shallow quakes. and no 2.5 anywhere would feel like a major jolt. lame attempt to make a small quake seem dramatic.

dude, you sound like an a-hole - if you read the summary it basically backs up what OP is describing.

they don't explain why that is, but I would imagine it has to do with the actual amount of surface area and composition of crust there.
 Quoting: Murmuring_Sparrows

What OP said was that quakes there are felt more intensely. What your link says is that it's felt across a greater distance - as in it carries further due to the type of land/soil/rock. It does not mean they feel a 2.5 as a 5. They would feel it as a 2.5 - but more people over a greater distance would feel it. Also California has tons of shallow quakes.

you aren't comprehending. they are felt across a greater distance, in some cases. that is it. what you guys try to say is that they are felt STRONGER. they aren't. a 2.5 is still felt as a 2.5. it's not that hard to understand.

Its an opinion not scientific theory we're looking at. When you have a plate pop instead of accumulated energy running down a line it feels stronger. I've had enough background science to understand completely what you're saying, but a 2.5 in the midwest at certain locals will feel stronger than a coastline quake

The point here is when people who are not used to feeling quakes feel a small one they freak. it gets over exaggerated in the excitement and novelty of it. Then inevitably when someone from the west coast who feels them all the time pokes fun that it was only a small quake, then the "the east coast feels them stronger" crap begins. It is a willful twisting of the facts to cover the embarrassment of the initial overreaction. I don't see where you read anyone questioning whether or not there was a quake. What I see is someone was pointing out that many on here are jackasses for not getting that "carries further" does not mean "increases the magnitude so we feel it stronger".

Earthquakes are caused by accumulated elastic strain that causes ruptures when the shear force becomes to great. This rupture point is where the magnitude is generated. If you have a denser substrate(soil medium) the energy transfer is greater, magnitude is the same but the energy transfer is greater. You will feel this strain transfer more on geoconcentric soil. Seismic waves conduct heat and sound as energy components. An earthquake on a massive limestone plate is going to carry a greater seimic wave because it doesn't have energy dissipants to reduce the shock ie, it feels worse!!!!!!!

Thank you for the explanation!

Here in OK, quakes feel like a sudden, immediate 'crack! boom!' just like a car or truck ran into your house.

When copy/pasting something it's best to understand what it says. What the other poster or posters said is correct. A 2.5 in Oklahoma feels like a 2.5. Period. Energy transfer in quakes is referring to the distance it is traveling outward. like ripples in a pond when you toss a rock in. It does not in any way mean that when you are at the epicenter that you feel a 2.5 as a larger quake. You feel it as a 2.5. The "ripples in the pond" in some cases in the eastern portion of the states carries further. This does not make the quake bigger, felt harder, or anything special. It simply means the ripples in the pond spread out further. It has been explained many times. On this thread alone. There is a willful refusal to comprehend it because you want to believe your little quakes are something epic and special. You feel embarrassed for making a big deal out of a little quake and so you repeat the "east coast feels quakes bigger than west coast" bullshit.

Re: Earthquake Oklahoma Just Felt It!!!

You will not, in any area at any time get the feeling of a truck running into your house from a 2.5. And the "crack boom" type quakes are not exclusive to OK or the eastern regions. There are different types of fault movement that produces different types of quakes. Such as strike-thrust and thrust. Whether you are in CA, WA or OK - the type of quake you get will depend on the type of fault. Not simply because you are in OK and "different".
