Thank you for all of the kind replies.

Remember that we are inland, away from any major fault zones, and for some reason earthquakes east of the Rockie Mountains are shallower than California quakes, and are "felt" much more intensely.

So a 2.5 may seem like nothing to someone accustomed to California or other major fault zone quakes, but to someone in our geography they feel like a major jolt.

I ran outside immediately when it happened, and all of the local birds where squawking and screeching as they took flight.

For what it is worth, bird behaviour had been normal right up until the quake.

no they don't. you've lost all credibility there. cali has it's share of shallow quakes. and no 2.5 anywhere would feel like a major jolt. lame attempt to make a small quake seem dramatic.

dude, you sound like an a-hole - if you read the summary it basically backs up what OP is describing.

they don't explain why that is, but I would imagine it has to do with the actual amount of surface area and composition of crust there.

What OP said was that quakes there are felt more intensely. What your link says is that it's felt across a greater distance - as in it carries further due to the type of land/soil/rock. It does not mean they feel a 2.5 as a 5. They would feel it as a 2.5 - but more people over a greater distance would feel it. Also California has tons of shallow quakes.
