Well, we can probably all agree that, left to our own devices, we will be lazy and make poor choices. If you look at the overall health of poor America, it is obvious that our hard-earned tax dollars spent on social services and education are not being taken advantage of in the manner intended.

So, we can let the poor choices continue to be made and pay for it later down the road in the form of higher taxes to cover all that indigent healthcare.

Or, we can demand that the behavior changes because it is incredibly damaging to our society as a whole.

Since the nature of our people is to scream about personal liberties, I guess we have no choice but to continue to pay for other people's poor choices because they are American and they are entitled to do whatever they want and fuck everyone else.

Citing a recent report by public health lawyer Michele Simon at EatDrinkPolitics.com, Nestle recently made the following observations on her blog about "some of the politics behind efforts to maintain the status quo":

•Food industry groups such as the American Beverage Association and the Snack Food Association teamed up with anti-hunger groups to oppose health-oriented improvements to SNAP.
•Companies such as Cargill, PepsiCo, and Kroger lobbied Congress on SNAP, while also donating money to America's top anti-hunger organizations (who fear any changes to the Food Stamps program will result in benefit cuts).
•At least 9 states have proposed bills to make health-oriented improvements to SNAP, but none have passed, in part due to opposition from the food industry.
•Coca-Cola, the Corn Refiners of America, and Kraft Foods all lobbied against a Florida bill that aimed to disallow SNAP purchases for soda and junk food.
•Banks and other private contractors are reaping significant windfalls from the economic downturn and increasing SNAP participation.
"The point here is that banks that administer SNAP have a vested interest in keeping SNAP enrollments high and makers of junk foods have a vested interest in making sure that there are no restrictions on use of benefits," she writes.

The point is that there are people and organizations out there that are trying to improve the health of (unhealthy) America. They are being SHUT DOWN in their efforts by huge corporations that are heavily invested in the continued consumption of the crap they manufacture (crap because it is cheap to produce). If those corporations cared about America they would care about keeping us all alive to continue to produce and consume and put money in their pockets, they don't care about our country, our people, our health, our environment...

ALL they care about is MONEY!!! Keep giving it to them...

This article has nothing to do with whether people should or should not get food stamps. It's about the underlying motives for keeping the food stamp system the way it is, and how there is incentive from big corps and the feds to keep people on them.

Overall big deal. Were still a great nation. Its not like were drinking dirty water from stream like most do in third world countries. Be thankful you have every conceivable product on earth to eat.

medical. if we could only have medical still... I swear, they need to make people aware of how much their medical bills cost the tax payers.

I never knew that to go to my specialist it was 185 a pop... and he had me coming every two weeks for blood tests to 'monitor' the thyroid levels in my system...

once I got off medicaid and on the health program provided by my employer, I quickly realized, shit man, I can't afford to do this! Am I gonna die if I don't do it?

And my oldest, she turned 19 this year and she is like 'what...no insurance? mom wtf am I gonna do' (she has similar health problems to me... genetic testing could have prevented this by sterilizing me...sorry my lovely girl, but facts are facts)

so now, I'm scraping together money to help her get to clinics... in Arkansas... shit man, don't be poor in Arkansas.

No planned parenthoods to go at least get pap smears and health checks, none of the health department people give a real shit about your health problems. Doctors? My three younger kids still qualify for what they call ARKIDSB

I went to the doctor, and wasn't done paying on my bill yet, and the doctor refused to see my kids because I owed a bill still...even tho their insurance pays 100% ...although he can't charge them 180 dollars, medicaid has some kind of limit that doctors have to accept.


I went there with two sick kids, not just wah i'm sick, but really sick kids. The clinic policy booted them because me, and of bill. they said go to the emergency room, medicaid will pay.

???? ok and spent three times as much tax payer dollars because i can't afford to pay the 185 bill all at once?


and we don't even have the same insurance.


I am on a rant now, but this whole issue is so freaking depressing.

Sometimes, I just want to go be homeless long enough to get back on housing up north, get a nice remodelled apartment in a old school house, hang out with loved ones, help out in the community garden, and say fuck you machine!

90 percent of our factories were shut down. Factory work used to provide a liveable wage for all those without college educations.

With most of our factories gone and hope of good employment gone, the Government compensated with foodstamps.

Its a way of saying, sorry we shipped out your jobs. We will still keep you alive though..

Hey...if you have a plan, lets hear it! My plan right now includes... sacrificing air conditioning and hot water, buying bare essentials,to continue trying to pay my student loans, day care, rent, utilities, and gasoline costs... going off the grid is one thought. just leaving. my daughter walked into my room just now and is beggin me to get someone to watch the dogs so we can go visit family up north. My dad offered to pay my gas money... but I am afraid if I go visit I may never return... and then what was it all for? There are no teaching jobs up north. Hey, if there more info I should know about, inbox me..my email public... you know...some top secret info :))

If you have family go with that. To ride the storm that's coming you need each other plain and simple.
Only my opinion, but who said your teaching career is finished? Surely there are children up north (?) and what you're saying doesn't mean there will never be another teaching position available there.
Life sounds miserable for you where you are now, so why not take a leap of faith when you have family, the greatest strength you could hope for.

I know, you are right! And ... I know that I could get a job in a non teaching position.. My daughter just left the room...I'll post back if I suddenly make the leap of faith...we probably will leave tonight. 19 hours straight to Duluth Minnesota and jump in my big beautiful lake. Perhaps, this begins a journey of transformation and courage I have been searching for...or at the least, a visit with family...
