I love how realistic these books are. Hot college grad meets manipulative billionaire who's merely 25.

If you had some poor, broke motherfucker with no future who met this girl, it wouldn't be a fantasy of erotic porn,it would be murder with him trying to fuck her to death in rape scenes and BDSM. So the writer went with her imagination. Try it sometime, you'll be shocked at what's in your own head!

It's more like a bondage-inflected romance novel.

Women love the book because the guy is doing everything right... (sexually speaking) chuckle

if this book is so popular does that mean that we women secretly all have the desire to be involved in this kind of sexual activity (bdsm)?

its odd how something that is peculiar in that it is a particular type of fetish or fantasy can become a number one best seller and therefore mainstreamed?

I think it's a combination of power and servitude. (Bdsm) embodies that.

Not only is the guy super rich, but his wealth allows him to fulfill a woman's desires beyond her wildest dreams.

Think extravagant settings and virtually endless cash flow.

Women crave these things. There's no denying that...

Wife works with 6 other lady's and they are all reading Shades on their Kindle's. So wife bought a Kindle and reading Shades. She likes it. So I gave her Ann Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy. That will get her attention.

Im in agreement with you, Anne Rice's Prince Charming would laugh his ropes off at Fifty Shades trilogy, I took a break in study to read something easy, I laughed through most of it, soft porn for Twilight fans is as good as it gets and I googled the last books ending as I couldn't tolerate another book of bad english and repetition. I for one am glad to get back to the science papers

Re: 50 Shades of Grey ---- Who has read it?
I have not read it, but I have read enough from people who have.

It is hardcore BDSM between a young woman and a much older man, who doesn't want a commitment or any kind of stronger emotional attachment, but the BDSM.

If that's your thing, go for it. But personally, I don't like reading the BDSM stuff. Much less the BDSM without any emotional backdrop.

There is one thing, and one thing only that propels a romance novel above the rest. MARKETING!!

Romance genre, above and beyond all the rest, is so flowing and the readers so voracious, that the only thing that makes a book in this genre "top" is marketing.

There have been a large number of books "top" of the best seller list that are horribly written, packed with typographical and grammatical errors, plot holes, uninteresting erotic scenes... so why "best seller"??

MARKETING!

There's no hidden meaning in what "women actually want" here. There's hidden meaning in what's being pushed onto women as "the best books for women" by MARKETING.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey ---- Who has read it?
I am a woman who read it to see what the hype was about. It is badly written (even the author admits it wouldn't win any writing awards). I wrote better stuff on cocktail napkins back in the 80's.

I honestly found it boring but for women who have never read true erotica then I guess they would like it. Also the soccer moms who have scheduled sex on Sundays between 9:30 and 9:36 p.m.

OF all the paranormal romance shit I've read, what i'm see is that women are just as dissapointed as men with the entire human race and are looking for other worldly pursuits. Hell, women want romances with vampires and werewolves,(rolleyes) and men want to fuck alien chicks with blue skin, lol!

OH dear god we ar not satisfied with Larry the Cable guy nor Shaniqua the fat black chick with 3 kids and she's looking for somebody to be her baby's daddy, lol!
Hell, if that was all i had to choose from, then give me a GQ model any day and damn Larry the Cable guy.lol!

I'm a writer, and believe me, the quality of a book has almost ZERO to do with hitting number 1 bestseller. It's marketing all the way.

So all that's left is to wonder why certain books are overhyped and why a lot of really good books are barely marketed at all, leaving all the marketing to the author.

Just sayin', that's a fact of the biz... you want a best seller, you don't really need to write a great book, you just have to Know People and Market out your ass.

Heh, yeah, I guess so.

But I've been noticing some disturbing trends in writing these days. Been turned down for publishing because I won't call men and women "males" and "females".

I hold no doubt that the purpose of that is dehumanization.
