You can get the channels for your local area police by doin a google search. Also here's a link to an online police scanners for OZ. [link to www.radioreference.com] |

I have a GRECOM PSR 800 and it gets most open and trunked communications plus aviation. It's a bitch to program but read the owners manual about a dozen times and you will figure it out. But seriously, it does pick up some good comm's and with an external antenna it rocks. It's expensive (about $400 US) but worth it with all of the bells and whistles it has. Didn't look at the links mate, but I can inform you right now that the Victorian Metropolitan Police are on an ENCRYPTED APCO 25 Digital trunking network - I.E. NO HOPE OF LISTENING IN!!! I did listen into the boys in blue for 20 odd years, before they went to APCO 25 :( However, they are on analog in the country areas, not sure about interstate - and I'd seriously consider buying one (if you still want one) from www.strictlyham.com.au - Tell Ross that VK3VMS (I'm a ham as well as a two way radio tech - the vk3vms is my ham callsign), sent you there, the guy is fantastic and his prices are probably the cheapest in Oz. You also get the genuine factory warranty in it too - He has 2 different manufacturers of APCO 25 scanners, that being the Icom IC-R2500, which is a base/mobile scanner or the Uniden Bearcat UBCD396XT, which is a handheld.... Personally I'd buy the Icom as it is made in Japan, NOT the Philipines - and that is where most of the commercial radio gear is manufactured. Dunno for how much longer that'll be though ;) You also get a 5 year warranty on Icom gear as well :) Hope that helps ya mate :) Somewhere Down Under... Rabid_Wolf User ID: 18216529 United States 06/20/2012 05:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'd look up the frequencies that you want to listen to and then get the least expensive scanner that covers those frequencies. If they change over to encrypted transmissions you won't lose out on too much cash. Here is a place to start looking for the frequencies you may want to listen to: [link to www.radioreference.com] I wouldn't spend more than $250(USD) unless you are a serious scanner enthusiast. My $230(USD) Radio Shack handheld scanner gets all the frequencies I want for everything around me except the local military base. It has 1000 programmable channels and I only use about 50 of them. I could have gotten away with a cheaper one and still heard everything I want to hear. That's my 2 cents worth. Last Edited by Rabid Wolf on 06/20/2012 05:32 AM |

Not a good idea, as we are in IARU region 3, and the US is in IARU region 1, hence different step sizes and different band plan!! Somewhere Down Under... The OP buying a scanner that just covers the frequencies they want to hear, or me using a Radio Shack scanner built for my country? I wasn't suggesting a Radio Shack scanner for the OP, just giving an example of the one I have, it's features, and that I could have gotten a cheaper one with less features to cover what I wanted to listed to. Am I missing something? Last Edited by Rabid Wolf on 06/24/2012 09:11 AM |
