We'll take our chances amongst family and friends - we're now starting to see Spanish resentment towards the foreigners that initially brought their money here. Now Spain isn't prospering they want foreigners to leave. We're just an average family that live in an average townhouse - no pool or luxury villa for us. We're self employed and pay tax and social security. My kids go to Spanish schools and they've lived here more than half their lives so it's not been an easy decision to leave. When we see locals leaving and moving to Germany and we're seeing resentment building towards us foreigners then it's time to go. Only 6% unemployment in the UK compared to 25% here (52% for under 25s). |

That could be funny but we live inland from the Costa del Sol tourist area so things here aren't as bad as other areas of Spain. However, bars and restaurants are closing because there aren't enough tourists. No chance of even getting a job pouring Fosters and cooking shrimp on barbies. Any hopes Italy and Spain may have had that the Greek election result would ease pressure on their own debt crises were dashed early on Monday when financial markets reacted as if nothing had changed. Quoting: DoorBert [link to www.4-traders.com] El Confidential reporting Spanish residential mortgages may mean Spain need 150 billion, for their banks, and not the 100 billion initially reported. Apparently none of the initial figures included residential mortgage figures because they can't be defaulted on... in normal circumstances. Even if bankruptcy is declared here, you're on the hook for like and they'll chase you forever even if it means waiting until you die to take anything you may have. However, these are not normal circumstances and homes are being repossessed at a rapid rate with the banks having no way to recover the outstanding mortgage and no way of auctioning properties to cover them either. At the moment those residential properties are sitting in the bank's asset columns. There are whole developments of 1000s of apartments that sit half built and they also sit in bank asset columns because people paid deposits 'off plan' and are therefore liable for the whole value they agreed to buy for. Many developments had bank guarantees but it's recently become apparent that most of those bank guarantees were offered by offshore banks and they can't be forced to guarantee the mortgages. Spanish residential mortgages are a huge hole here and it's unbelievable that they have been included in figures... but not surprising really. |
