If a parent was protecting their child against a murderer, I do not think that Jesus would have found fault with their actions. If that is the case, it would have been very convenient to use and interpret that saying to their advantage. Perhaps what Jesus meant is those who needlessly live by the sword, will create karma of being killed by the sword in their future. Live by the sword may have meant killing people regularly. The 'live by the sword die by the sword' is referring to soldiers - Roman soldiers, specifically. The hebrews wrote the buy-bull to help bring down the Roman Empire - and it worked! The Roman soldiers 'put away their sword' and were overrun by barbarian hordes. |
