Physics Community Afire With Rumors of Higgs Boson (aka God Particle) Discovery!!
One of the biggest debuts in the science world could happen in a matter of weeks: The Higgs boson may finally, really have been discovered.

“The bottom line though is now clear: There’s something there which looks like a Higgs is supposed to look,” wrote mathematician Peter Woit on his blog, Not Even Wrong.

The possible news has a number of physics bloggers speculating that LHC scientists will announce the discovery of the Higgs during the International Conference on High Energy Physics, which takes place in Melbourne, Australia, July 4 to 11.

Re: Physics Community Afire With Rumors of Higgs Boson (aka God Particle) Discovery!!
Excitement about the Higgs boson is ramping up ahead of a hotly anticipated conference in Australia next month. But even if last year's tentative signals of the particle are confirmed, a fresh analysis of data from a particle accelerator in California suggests that this may not complete the standard model of physics.

Can you sum this up in a few dumbed-down sentences for non-science/math folks? Thanks.

Its the last remaining particle yet to be discovered in the standard model.

Commonly called the "God Particle"

Here, let me sum it up for you: BULLSHIT.

After forty years and countless BILLIONS of dollars wasted on this idiocy, they still have NOT FOUND ANYTHING.

THey never will, because their theories are WRONG.

They will FOREVER be ALMOST JUST ABOUT to discover it, they just need a few more millions.

FUCKING BULLSHIT.

"God Particle" is just some crap the media ran with after a book someone wrote about the quest for finding this particle.

It has nothing to do with metaphysics, or explaining how the universe came into being. The Higgs is simply a boson (a class of subatomic particles) which explains why particles have mass under the Standard Model.

If it can be proven to exist, it is another confirmation that we are on the right track to figuring out how matter works.

Without it, physics has to take a step back and reassess where the model goes wrong.

Have scientists found the Higgs boson? If so, here’s why we care.

Scientists want to understand why particles — like electrons and protons — have mass. Without “mass” you or I or planets or stars could not exist. And for a long time scientists have been digging into quantum mechanics, trying to find the roots of mass. They believe the Higgs is key to this.

Re: Physics Community Afire With Rumors of Higgs Boson (aka God Particle) Discovery!!
Reminds me of the standard hype usually connected to new movies/computer games/IT hardware.

If I were you, I'd ignore recent proclamations of finding this or that, and look at some, now long forgotten, LHC official announcements.

The very first thing that they (LHC) officially announced, in their own documents, was the hope of creating and manipulating microscopic black holes (which, in theory, should allow for some very exotic physics, like time travel, warp drives, energy sources, etc.). But then, some other physicists expressed their concerns that micro black holes created by LHC would be stable enough, and would not completely evaporate through Hawking radiation, but would instead embed themselves at the center of the Earth.

After having grown enough, by feeding themselves the energy from the Earth's core, they would eventually affect the Earth's crust and produce observable effects of...

a) Unusually high number of unusually strong earthquakes all over the planet, especially in places not known for producing large or frequent earthquakes

b) Unusually high number of unusually strong vulcanic eruptions

After a big debate in and out of the physics community, the whole discussion about microsopic black holes simply vanished from the view. If you try to mention black holes in relation to LHC these days, you'll probably end up being ridiculed and ignored.

...

If only I could just as easily ignore the unusually large number of unsually strong earthquakes and vulcanic eruptions I've been hearing about these days.
