Batten down the hatches. A financial storm is coming sooner then we think..
I have known for a few years that things after the 2008 crash would be many years before anything got back to what we could see as "normal". The 2008 crash and its causes were unlike anything in the past.

I also understood we had a very long and painful road ahead to still walk. But until yesterday i never got a real sense of how bad this could actually get in the near future.

look at how many articles from people i would consider having some idea of the inner workings of the global markets (and of course opinion pieces) have made regarding this coming global financial train wreck in just the last few days.

I'm not saying run to your bunkers and close the door..but i am saying maybe start (if you haven't already) stocking up on a few necessities and daily items you might need if things go completely pear shaped and companies start to close their doors in a global recession. You might not have the cash later to get some things so why not have a stock around so it takes some pressure off what could be a very limited budget if the SHTF.

P.s Thank-you very much for the pin grinning

I agree. I think maybe a week or two will be hairy and then settle down a bit.

for me living alone this is a few things i keep stocked up.

I'll explain the "weird ones"

I do this so if i find myself on a tight budget(loss of job etc) at least it will take some pressure off the little money i will have and its the daily or quickly consumable items i found that can chew through a tight budget.

misc items> i rotate perishables

Toilet paper (i keep 2-3 24 roll aside)
Kleenex ( 2-3 6 pack of boxes)
Laundry detergent (enough for 6 months to a year)
Dish detergent (2-3 extra bottles)
Hand soap (12+ bars)
hair shampoo( 3-4 bottles)
hand sanitizer
razors
my vitamins ( 3 bottles of 90 each)
fish oil tablets (3 bottles of 200 tablets each)
Daily aspirin ( 3 bottles of 100 each)
ibuprofen and tylenol ( 3 large bottles each)
cold meds and allergy meds
Vicks ointment ( 2 jars)

Food stuffs

Flour (3 x 15 lb bags)
rice (3 x 10 lb bags)
beans (canned and dried)
canned vegetables and fruit
dried fruits
Pasta
pasta sauce
Sugar (6 1 lb bags)
coffee (6 cans folgers)
Tea
peanut butter ( 3-4 jars)
Honey ( about 3 lbs)
jerkied meats
cooking oil ( about 16 litres)
lard
seeds ( lettuce,tomatoe,onions,cabbage,squash,herbs)

I keep 1 freezer stocked with meats(ground beef, pork chops, sausages, chicken) + about 5 lbs of butter frozen and frozen vegetables and i keep a second freezer stocked with frozen bread and other things.

+ ( my emergency stock of 6 months of #10 cans freeze dried meals)

other stuff. (the weird to some)

Books i haven't read yet

Video games (single player offline, no internet required)
I like my video games but if i am short on money i wont be paying for internet or just dial up at best and hence i want to have something to enjoy at least that can take my mind off things for a number of hours and offer variety.

this is just a short list and tbh it really doesnt take up much space in a 2 bedroom apt at all. One small closet measuring 6 x6 actually.

but the idea behind my being "prepared" isnt for an end of the world doom scenario..its just to make sure if i lose my job and have to cutback drastically to make ends meet at least for a year or so i have my basics covered until i get myself hopefully back into some sort of employment or find a way to earn a living wage. from basic foods and being able to feed myself to being able to keep doing my pastimes (video games) that i enjoy to keep some resemblance of normalcy without having any money to spend.

it may sound a bit out there, but it makes sense to me.

non-GMO seeds.
bicycles.
basic tools.
good health.
community & ethics.
non-attachment.
back to basics.
live with awareness NOW.

doesn't matter who you are, what your beliefs are, how you live...under all of it, when it comes to basic needs we are all the same. we have this ego-based attachment to externals, and it is an illusion. you'll be amazed how fast the illusion falls away when the externals no longer support it, and the more your ego depends upon those externals, your material possessions, your social status, etc., the harder this is going to be.

whether this happens of not, whether it pans out in total chaos and the pre-WWII german scenario with a loaf of bread costing millions of dollars or somehow the printing of worthless cash really does save the day, we have been getting this wake-up call for a long time because we have lived unsustainably. bottom line is, WE CANNOT MAINTAIN THIS ME-FIRST CONSUMERISM AND LACK OF CULPABILITY.

this isn't the first or last warning. but the water is getting hotter.

Nope..lots of us keep a stock of this.

I keep mine for the "worse case scenario" that could pop up. I am aiming for a 1 year supply. Its basic needs and definitely not a balanced diet, but at least its something to put in your stomach if worse ever came to worse.

Re: Batten down the hatches. A financial storm is coming sooner then we think..
things people aren't considering:

loss of electricity:

NO refrigeration. the only way to store meat and other commodities would be if the meat is smoked, and if you know how to properly bury food for refrigeration. food storage in a primitive manner is the only way to stock up, and stocking up is essential for survival when resources are scarce and seasons do not allow for year round gardening.

the ability to create solar, tesla and alternative sources of energy is crucial. at least know how to start a fire. that said, if you are the only person who has those skills when everyone around you is unprepared and unskilled, be prepared to defend. SECURITY will be a fundamental need. sticks and stones and breaking bones.

those 'emergency packets' of food are NOT a sustainable food source. they lack the nutrients needed for extended well-being and physical strength. they are intended for short-term emergencies. scurvy is real. ironically, most americans are already living on a sub-par, processed food diet, so this means they are going to feel the effects of nutrient deprivation and the inherent mental instability that accompanies much sooner.

deprivation of nutrients and fluids, withdrawal from addictive substances, shock and grief are all major factors that impact the mental stability needed for survival.

INTUITION. survival intuition is something most people have never cultivated. listen to your dreams, learn your signals. a lot of people on GLP get caught up in the fear and doom mongering and have dreams about the End...these are based in paranoia, not intuition. much as in the primitive times of shamans and seers, those who can truly dream will have a crucial role in survival of the group.

If you cant smoke meat:
cans of tuna, chicken, chili, ham, spam, etc. Also 6-7 jars of peanut butter, and stock up on crackers, noodles, flour, and yeast, salt in case you cant buy bread for awhile.

I read recently that we should all be saving our change and make $2 rolls of nickles. This might be the only currency that will be accepted while the change over is happening. Just start throwing your change in a large jar, its not that hard and you can always use it for any type of emergency that comes along.

Everyone should keep a 30 day supply of food at all times. This isn't going off the deep end or going to extremes, just good common sense. Money can get tight for any number of reasons for individuals, let alone a weather emergency or natural disaster of some sort. The problem is usually straightened out within that time frame, but it is one less thing to worry about.

why nickels, though, to get back to your suggestion?

you are right about seeds. i believe the nickles because $2 rolls are easy to carry and use. the other rolls have more value and have to be broken down if you are only buying a few things. pennies work also.

Something no-one want to think about, but will be good barter, too is Pads. I know if it's bad for a while other things could be used but these make great wound dressings also. Hey, if it's THAT bad this will be the primary usage. If it's not THAT bad, yet, then great barter items or a sense of cleanliness for oneself!

Simple things will be appreciated. The soldiers in Iraq loved the wet wipes, these are the things that remind us that we are human.

Don't you mean...LATER than we think.

There have been so many threats and financial downfalls that keep getting picked right back up again as if they never happened. We've been hearing people talk the same DOOM garbage about the economy forever. Nothing ever happens.

And technically, the economy is already gone. We're just skating by off of the fumes of the illusion that its still successful. But, that illusion still putts forward...so, until it happens, it ain't happened.

I've 'heard' the economic collapse is coming in August or November. I was told to get enough supplies for a month, as it will be devastating, but not long lasting in as far as not being able to get goods.

Many people remember to stock up on seeds but forget about the value of owning a canner along with canning jars and extra lids, wax and a couple of good canning and pickling books and of course salt and vinegar (for pickling).

hmm, this is making more sense to other things I have heard as well.

Take this for what it's worth. To me, thinking of some other 'scenarios' I have heard discussed, it makes sense.

It will be economic, but the collapse of the economy is going to come from an 'exterior' event. In other words, it will be a non-economic event that causes the global economy to collapse.

We are at the brink of collapse right now. All it is going to take is a push. The stronger the push, the more unimaginable the collapse will become.

End of August...maybe the end of November. Global economy is literally on the edge. Election year. Something could be perfectly timed to bring it all down. Insiders, terrorists, a planned collapse. It would be the perfect timeframe, IMO

I'm still trying to supply my jars! We don't use one of those canners, we do it the old fashioned way and every year we need more and more jars.

I was really interested on drying out some peppers on a screen but think my area is too humid to do that. It gets very hot but I don't think anything would happen except maybe mold.
