It scares me when official sources say it was a freak phenomenon. Low pressure? What the hell kind of low pressure other than a typhoon would cause that?

It's not an active temple (for worshiping) - it's an ancient monument and tourist attraction.

I know this phenomenon from some visits in Sri Lanka: If there are strong winds from the sea the waves get higher and flood lower areas (as this temple and the town of Mamallapuram, both only a few meters above sea level.)
It has nothing in common with a destructive tsunami wave.

I also know it from my hometown, Hamburg, where we get storm tides frequently during autumn an winter. The fishmarket at the shore of the Elbe river e.g. is then flooded up to three meters.
