ST. CATHARINES, ON Canada - Once again, our Canada Border Services Agency is making it sound like they are standing on guard for thee.
But once again, the rampant paranoia over the border we share with the United States is chipping away at our privacy and it scares me how some people continue to rationalize it .
Airports and border crossings across Canada are being wired with high-definition cameras and microphones that can listen in on your supposedly private conversations before and after your cross-border interview.
The snooping equipment is already in place at some airports and border points, as part of an effort to enhance “border integrity, infrastructure and asset security and health and safety.”
In a release, the head honchos with CBSA went on to weakly explain “it is important to note that even though audio technology is installed, no audio is recorded at this time. It will become functional at a later date.”
Is that supposed to make us feel better?

Faced with questions from reporters and privacy advocates, our fearless leaders backtracked a bit this week and said the program was being temporarily halted to make sure it wasn’t bending one or two rules.
