Hey Anne!

Great job cross referencing...

I'm up checking the market pulse in order to write a forecast for my mailing list

A few noteworthy headlines:

Central Banks Face Power Limit As Debt Persists, BIS Says

Central banks in developed nations are confronting the limits of their ability to aid economic recovery as government efforts to strengthen their finances fall short, the Bank for International Settlements said.

This one>> Capital Controls Hit Spain: Government Laws Prohibit Cash Transactions Over €2,500; Minimum Fine of €10,000 for Failure to Report Foreign Accounts

[link to globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com]

some interesting comments on the mish piece:

The cash transaction limit is 1,000 Euros and all the foreign accounts and properties have to be declared, moreover ALL the credit card systems have to send a statement with all the transactions to the client and another one to the tax offices. The Spain legislation is much more liberal than in Italy....

The govt just sent a very important and powerful message to all those other places that have not yet done this.....if you have not moved your money yet, DO SO IMMEDIATELY!!

drain the euros from your bank account and as much as you can borrow in Euros and repay in el cheapo pasetas - a winning move even at official exchange rates

withdrawal limits in Spain & Italy must be very close at hand

Wolf Richter: Fishy Economic Data and the China Crash

An unrelenting, horrid wave of scandals about toxic ingredients in foods and medicines in China shows that regulators are unwilling and incapable of controlling it. It also shows a penchant—some evil tongues say it’s cultural—for pandemic cheating in order to get ahead in some way. And Chinese economic data falls into that category.

Every country has its own bureaucratic madness in pursuing obfuscation. In the US, one of the hardest things to get is a truthful, or at least a somewhat realistic, or at the very least a not totally fabricated unemployment and jobs number. But at least, the Bureau of Labor Statistics issues a slew of supplemental data. So, in addition to the nearly worthless headline numbers that media and politicians wave in proclaiming victory, we get numbers that point at deeper fissures [for a fun head-butting on this issue, read Yves Smith’s post].

But in China, the art of data manipulation is such that even the government might not know the true status of the economy. Officials even at the local level are rewarded, promoted, or demoted, based on achieving their economic quotas as measured by tax receipts, business revenues, real estate developments, and so on. Hence, the incentive to fudge the numbers on an individual basis is high. According to the New York Times, “The officials do so by urging businesses to keep separate sets of books, showing improving business results and tax payments that do not exist.”

Be afraid: Some in U.S. see shades of 2008 in euro crisis

Some even suggest markets are taking on shades of the 2008 global crisis, with the potential for a collapse in investor confidence, bank runs in Europe and a seizure for the global financial system.

"History may not repeat but it often rhymes. The fear is that it could be a replay of 2008. The reality is that the potential for a replay of 2008 on steroids is not exactly zero," said Bonnie Baha, portfolio manager at DoubleLine Capital, which oversees $35 billion. Baha, who is based in Los Angeles, was speaking while visiting Europe last week.

Added financier Steve Rattner, who is the former head of the U.S. auto task force, "We should be terrified about the euro crisis because the Europeans are trying to fix a deeply flawed system with the equivalent of Band-Aids,"

Re: EBT and Debit Down For Major Grocer
It is definitely a possible cause

That's why I'm at work on a Sunday, trying to prepare a roadmap for the coming week

Again, as I mentioned on the other thread, there is this game of cat and mouse we're playing with the treasuries and central bankers

In 2008, the picture was much clearer, they allowed us to follow the respected indicators of risk: Libor/OIS, Euribor, VIX, even honest pricing of precious metals and US dollars

Now, they are trying to prevent hedge funds from exacerbating the problem , they're trying to prevent bear raids, esp on banks which can end up being incredibly costly to taxpayers.

They remember well how predator funds and fellow Ibanks turned cannibalistic shorted Bear, Lehman into insolvency and attempted to drop WFC BAC and C in a feeding frenzy of shorting

But in their understandable battle to prevent that feral pack activity, they've taken the batteries out of the smoke detectors and de-activated the fire alarms. The hurricane alerts have been disabled, the radars turned off unless you have government clearance...

Worse, they are adding deliberately misleading data to confuse the algos and bearish analysts like Nouriel Roubini (who have been deliberately discredited so that few follow their warnings or analysis)

So now how do we know there's trouble? Ordinary prudent investors just trying to remain solvent are increasingly caught in the cross fire between billionaires and central bankers

We're reduced to checking for broken twigs and signs of hoofprints in order to detect what is happening in an increasingly non-transparent system

Believe it or not, we were lucky when Lehman happened. At least the US has (or had) a fairly transparent market where it was difficult to hide problems as they unfolded. It will be far worse when a Lehman style event takes place in a command and control economy like China, Russia or even Europe

That's one of the reasons I check GLP...esp threads like this one

Annecdotal evidence , corroborated over a range of income levels and locations, can be one of the most powerful indicators

So. What are the twigs and hoofprints telling you tonight?

Re: EBT and Debit Down For Major Grocer
so we are still having this problem, and NO media about it, eh?

everyone is talking about ulster and natwest and norway, argentina and greece....

yet there seems to be something happening right under our noses that is not being disclosed. and it HAS to be related.

if natwest et al are so big, who ULTIMATELY owns them? who is in charge of these banks on the grand scale, and are they associated with american banks as well?

is jp morgan a good place to start looking for answers?

there were comments on one of the natwest articles about someone losing their home because of not being able to pay, and others getting black marks on their credit because of payments (automatic) not going through.

so many ways they profit off of this sort of thing. i hope that bank tanks.

and i hope you are not in arrears due to THEIR problem!!!!

make sure you hold onto all the info, screenshots or whatever that proves you are unable to process your finances. what bank are you with?

While most Americans are struggling hard to overcome the hardships of the recession, the profits of national banks continue to rise. JP Morgan is among those cashing-in ... and it's a contract to process food stamp payments that's helping it on its way. RT's Maria Portnaya found out how the rich benefit off the back of the poor.

Re: EBT and Debit Down For Major Grocer
Here's the thing ive learned about food stamps....

Almost 90% of the people I know personally getting assistance LIE about their income and living situations in order to get more - and the government does no thorough investigation at all for what these people tell them.

I on the other hand didn't lie about how much I make, who lives with me, and how many kids I have to take care of - and got zilch... The amount of food stamps they gave us for a family of four making less than 10,000 a year was 250 a month! No medical for the adults and no cash assistance.

As needed as this program is - it pains me to see it being taken advantage of so terribly...

That extra 250 a month is awesome - its a huge help - and I'm incredibly grateful - but i would never lie just to get more out of it - and I think the liars are allowed to lie because the program is making JP Morgan an incredible amount of money.

This is all my personal observation - I don't think they give a damn about the fabricators, I think they want it.

Edit: spelling.

What state are you in? I know single guys in MI and WV who got about that much and were buying food for friends because they had no idea how they would even eat that much (were used to living on less than half of $250).

I'm in florida.

Me and my fiance got 38$ in food stamps for the month. Not each, just 38$.

For our two 6 year olds combined, 200$.

I make just under 10,000 a year, and my fiance is currently unemployed.

We're humble and we're doing just fine.

But I like you know many people who get so much they have no idea how they could even spend all the money allocated to them.
