EBT and Debit Down For Major Grocer

The local Meijer has had signs on the door for at least a couple days saying they cannot cash payroll or government checks "due to computer problems".

Off topic, but I gotta tell you how much I love Fernandina Beach.

Vacationed there many times as a child and finally moved there for 10 months in 2005, but had to come back here for elderly relatives.

We lived on 1st Ave. 1 block from the beach.

yes, it's related. it's happening all over the place, not just the US.

I dont blame the single mothers looking for a way to make ends meet while keeping their kids fed. But i do blame the hoards of people who ABUSE the shit out of EBT, i promise 90% of the EBT recipients are 100% complacent getting free shit.

EBT is a CHOICE for most that use it, long gone are the days where being on public assistance was something the majority didnt want to be on and WORKED to get off it.

Tell me why the fuck the GAS STATION accepts EBT? they buying gas with it? Or im supposed to believe they are grocery shopping there? Gimme a break

speaking of growing pains, did you know you can buy food plant seeds with foodstamps?

i have yet to see a nursery that takes ebt, but places like grocery outlet, that have outdoor plant areas, will accept FS for both plants and seeds.

Tried to get gas. Saw this about half a dozen gas stations.

This is news to me but nothing i didnt expect. My work will often take me into the "Hood" where i will walk by and through many residences, you would think on a wednesday at 11 am there would be productive activity. However this is not the case, more often then not i will see a person living in a Section 8 subsidized living environment stoned or drunk at 11 in the fucking morning...

Everyone in subsidized housing qualifies for food stamps, they also qualify for free medical, they also qualify for assistance from any utility they may have to place in their name, they qualify for EVERYTHING possible and they take it all and never intend on getting off the assistance.
The part where corporations prefer someone who is on welfare is due to the fact the government is paying guaranteed on time every month like clockwork. The corporations benefit with revenue and the government benefits by having an indoctrinated slave that they control.

Okay the system does in fact go down sometimes, that being said, it sounds like a satelite problem to me. See, both c-stores and grocery use satelites to run their debit transactions.
It's probably First data and satelites. I know I spelled it wrong, too tired to care right now. I'm in the industry btw.

And how many do you see buying seeds for a garden? Why would they when they know that there EBT card will be filled again next month so they will eat again without having to play in the dirt.

More often then not i see EBT users trying to purchase items that aren't allowed to be purchased with foodstamps such as cigarettes and alcohol by working a deal with the clerk.

it's the food stamp benefit card. :) also has cash benefits on it, for people who qualify.

Of all the doom scenarios economic doom is probably one of the most boring but it could turn into something big if WE the people let it.

For what it's worth I just pulled out some cash from an ATM about and hour ago and and put $40 in my car about 1.5 hours ago (as debit). And our CC machine at work was fine all day today.

Publix, Sweetbay Experiencing Problems With Debit Cards

If you're headed to a Publix Supermarket or other retailer this evening, you should make sure you have a credit card or cash in your wallet to pay for your merchandise.

"We apologize for the inconvenience our customers are experiencing with the pin pad machines not accepting debit, EBT and gift cards. We are experiencing technical difficulties with that system," said Publix spokesperson Shannon Patten in an email.

Many cash registers at Publix, Sweetbay and other retailers were unable to process debit cards and some credit cards today amid what appeared to be a widespread network breakdown.

The outages were sporadic, and systems did work some times for some customers at the 1,000-plus Publix stores, said spokeswoman Shannon Patten. Many customers who planned to use debit were required to use a credit card or pay cash.

The breakdown appeared to start at least as early as 9 a.m. and had not been fixed as of late this afternoon. Other retailers, including Walmart and Old Navy, saw no breakdowns.

I just used my BofA debit card at a local market.. everything was fine. About 3-4 hours ago.

Was before the news of the actual downgrades was announced.

Going to go to the closest BofA branch since it is business closing time and seee if I can withdraw anycash from the atm.

Will report back in about 30mins to an hour to let you know what happened.

I don't worry about much (not worried as I keep very little cash in banks, only enough for e-transactions, and have a nice stockpile of copper, silver and gold) but given the recent news I'm thinking bank holidays.
