Quoting: Sleeping Giant Young children as well as the elderly waited in line in Athens to collect the parcels of fruit and vegetables donated by farmers from Crete to help ease the devastating austerity faced by many Greeks. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] The situation in Bulgaria is much worse than Greece, the people are much poorer. Yet nobody gives free food. I wonder how much longer the Bulgarians will wait for their fate to turn to a miracle. the progressives here are striving to be like Bulgaria thanks to the Billionaires seeking Monopolies by ridding the world of the 'evils' of Capitalistic entrepreneurial tsk tsk millionaires the Bulgarian reality is what all progressives desire comrade |

It was still communist and even with family there it was expensive to get the Visas. Our 3rd day in Sofia was my families day to get food. My Uncle remarked: "Oh good, we have bread this week." (There were 6 loaves on the barren racks.) Uncle Peter told me for the last 2 weeks there was no bread, so I suggested he take 2 loaves. He was horrified at my selfish suggestion, and said: "Then there will be no bread for my neighbours." YOU ARE A SHILL Is it my coherent and mostly well-structured posts that lead you to believe that? NO that's when yo u talk about having bread while Greeks are starving and alsothe bulgarian story...or you're selfish or a shill..is the pay good? just asking Idiot. Greeks are not starving. The hard times have barely begun and yet they cry, cry, cry, "The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep..Miles to go before I sleep."' |

Yeah, Greece. If it can happen there... Idiots. They 'give away their children' because 1. they are on television and 2. they are too lazy to grow a garden or find a fucking job. JOB JOB JOB It doesn't take much to feed your kids. It's called 'work'. Go away you government shill, you really are an epitome of everything that is bad about the world in which we live in. Hope this happens to you one day. P.S Have you seen the latest unemployment stats from Greece? Work???? Greece did what it did because the people did not want to work or take care of themselves. They wanted the gubmint to do it and this is what you fucking get when you depend on the damn gubmint. Blacks here in America are just the same. Gonna be a rude awakening. I bet there would be long queues for free-food in most places. During the depression when food was given out many would take the food then discard 50-pound bags of rice or beans along the side of the road which illustrated that those in real need were not receiving food while others picked and chose what they wanted and discarded the rest. We saw this during Hurricane Katrina when people looted televisions and other electronic devices and did not feel food was worthy of looting. Therefore, I conclude that initially greed will be the motivating factor in looting even if there is no electricity and when reality and hunger set in people will be beyond desperate. Yep. I had a guest over who remarked at my lack of stored food. I pointed to my store of dried beans, various types of rice, other properly stored grains, canned/dried meats, dried spices, my garden, and the few fresh veges/fruits/cheese in my fridge. They still didn't realize just how much 'food' I have. LoL Old Friend...I would not spread that around. |

Its farmers giving some undistributed production to the poor (which would end up in a landfill). Some points to clarify 1) Greeks don't retire in 50. That's bull. 2) Greeks are not lazy. They are #2 in the world behind the s. koreans in work hours per year (>2000 hours compared to 1400-1600 in central europe). 3) There has been no socialism in the country, ever. It was always capitalism. Center-left and center-right. 4) The primary reason for what's going on in Greece (Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal etc) is the euro. Imagine if tomorrow the US of A decided to abandon the $ in favor of a world currency. With debt at 100% of GDP where would you find money to repay the debt? Now you monetize the debt by printing new $$$. But if you gave to others this possibility then what would you do? You'd be entirely dependent on foreign creditors to give you money instead of just pushing a few buttons. The creditors would impose conditions on you prior to lending and eventually you'd lose sovereignty. Your whole country would be sold to foreigners in a couple of years, for pennies nonetheless. All the problems of PIIGS are euro-related. When a bank collapses, when the deficits are high, when the debt can't be repaid the solution was always there: internal borrowing / printing money. This option no longer exists. It's now external borrowing under strict conditions. Spain needs 100bn euro for its bank bailout yet the UK spent 1.1 trln GBP for its banks without a problem. Why? The UK had its own currency. No need to beg Merkel or some fuckin' eurocrats or the IMF to do what's self-evident... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18386369 [link to www.migrationinformation.org] March 2012 Once known for its large-scale emigration, Greece transitioned to a country of destination for Central and Eastern European immigrants after the fall of the Soviet Union and other communist regimes in the region. More recently, the country has become one of entry and transit for hundreds of thousands of unauthorized immigrants from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. As a result, Greece is now grappling with issues related to its highly porous borders, mounting asylum applications, faltering immigrant detention system, allegations of human-rights violations, and the effective integration of the country's many foreign-born permanent residents. Greece's geography, which became especially important after the formation of Europe's borderless Schengen Area, has also contributed to the country's transition to an immigrant-receiving nation. Positioned at the southeastern "gate" of the European Union, and with extensive coastlines and easily crossable borders, Greece has become a common transit country for those seeking entry into Europe. Conclusion More than 1 million immigrants have arrived in Greece over the course of two decades, contributing significantly to the improvement of the demographic and economic profile of the country. But since 2008, Greece has plummeted into economic turmoil in what may well be the worst recession in recent memory. In tandem with these devastating financial woes has been an increase in illegal immigration from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, primarily through the country's porous land and sea borders with Turkey. Greece has truly become the gateway to Europe for hundreds of thousands of unauthorized immigrants: In 2010 alone, nearly 133,000 people were apprehended for unauthorized entry or stay in Greece — a number that has decreased since the deployment of specialized Frontex teams in the region in October 2010. |

There is a lot to be done in order to relieve the economy but left and right wing leaders will always be against "the Foreign nazi invaders " and simple stability measures THAT HAVE TO BE IMPLEMENTED. The recession is fed (among other things ) by a widespread hostility against businesses , jobs , banks , employers , bosses (sic!) and bien sur against : LOCAL BANKS Who is against business and the local banks ? The famous Left wing opposition and the retarded right wing nationalists. They both seem to respect the international bankers and often have long discussions with them. |
