Learn about Ham Radios this weekend! Experts in your area this weekend!! This could save your life one day!!
Saturday and Sunday, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with local ham radio operators and see for themselves what amateur radio service is about at the annual Field Day. Showing the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and even historical Morse code, hams across the nation will hold public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

ARRL Field Day is This Weekend: Are You Ready?

Tens of thousands of Amateur Radio operators will be firing up portable radio stations from unexpected locations this weekend for ARRL Field Day. On June 23-24, over 35,000 hams are expected to operate from parks, malls, schools and. yes, fields, around the country.

Field Day is the climax of the week-long Amateur Radio Week sponsored by the ARRL. As of June 19, 21 states have issued proclamations thanking and supporting the hams for their community service work, and more are expected to do so.

Hams radios are as good as the information that is broadcasted...in other words trust your gut first. Depending on the event...you may not want to disclose yourself or act on mis-info that could steer you into more danger.

I went to one of these once. I told the guys I had always wanted a ham but couldn't afford one. They asked what year and model car I drove. I told them (it was a 2 year old Impala at the time) - and they laughed and said "Oh, you can afford it!" Will never forget that. Wanted to slap them.

Re: Learn about Ham Radios this weekend! Experts in your area this weekend!! This could save your life one day!!
I just emailed a DJ from a regional radio station since he does ham radio ... to ask him if he knew of anyone in our small rural county who did this. Hubby has always wanted to get into ham radio, but didn't know how to get started. I have no clue on radio pricing, but I know we definitely can't afford it, at least right now, but wouldn't mind still learning from someone.

There was no mention in our newspaper (comes out once a week on Wednesday), so I don't know if anyone will be around in parks, etc.

I took the advice of another post a few weeks ago and just bought my first ham radio. At only 60 bucks how can you go wrong and who doesn't have 3 Jacksons to spend on something this valuable. Now all i need to do is figure out how to use it, I think i will go out and find some local Ham's this weekend to give me some advice.

thanks OP for the heads up. hf

My dad is working a local field day. Hubby and I may go out to say hi. Hubby got his ham license a couple months ago. We also have a CB.

They don't cost very much. Also, if you check craigslist or newspapers you can often find good deals from estate sales. I mean a lot of older people like having ham radios and equipment. My dad has gotten some antennas for free from estate sales.

Not like you need a license to buy a transmitter/receiver.

Not like in "The Aftermath" that you will run a 1200w linear amplifier, antenna tuner, and masted yagi antenna by genset.

Lots of interesting capabilities with radios, but during WW-II and at other times, the US Govt has forbidden operations.

Can do about as much with a cell phone as any ham radio; lots more actually. Still a good general purpose receiver is a nice asset to have available. Learn how to make a decent dipole antenna and listen with headphones for faint signals.

Some of the older Icom and Yaesu transceivers could be modded to transmit on all frequencies. Some of the 5w low-power rigs are very cool for backpack use if you know CW=Morse Code.

Not like Hams make their own gear or assemble kits anymore, unless you figure fitting a computer board is tantamount to building a rig. If you want a Real Radio, you get a table-top rig with AC power and DC capability. Icom, Yaesu, Drake, Kenwood and others are out there. Maybe a large Grundig, Sony 2010, or a Transoceanic, even a late era Hallicrafters if you want to play with a BFO instead of switchable sideband.

a cheap shortwave set (15 bucks) covers the lower bands- a scanner will cover the upper bands for 20 bucks 2nd hand

50 bucks will buy you a wideband scanner that does the lot- but throw the supplied `rubber ducky' antenna in the bin and get a decent one- either a decent amount of wire in the air or a discone

the bigger the antenna, the better the signal- fact of life

Always wanted one of these since I was a kid.

So get a Baofeng UV-5r then take it to one of these shows to learn how to use it - correct? Can you play around with it and learn by trial and error or would this risk trouble with the authorities?
