Estate sales are the cheapest way to buy stuff ... but if you don't know what you are doing be sure to get a long time ham to go with you and AGREE TO HELP YOU set up the equipment.

Some used equipment, particularly at estate sales, is just plain JUNK ... and who needs cheap JUNK that DOESN'T work?

Basic license?

Go for a General Class immediately. Only takes about 2 additional hours of study time in addition to what you have to spend on the Technician Class license, and then you can use the HF bands (the ones your talk around the world on) in addition to the VHF/UHF bands (local talking only).

ARRL maintains a website that tells you where they are giving the exam, usually they are near any place in the country several times a year (around here somebody within easy driving distance is giving an exam almost every couple of weeks).

Always wanted one of these since I was a kid.

So get a Baofeng UV-5r then take it to one of these shows to learn how to use it - correct? Can you play around with it and learn by trial and error or would this risk trouble with the authorities?
 Quoting: Anonymous coward 263537524

sighs- the downside of the interwebs- you arent even supposed to be able to buy an unliscenced transmitter- let alone `fire it up and see how it works...

any liscenced users will quickly track down and report you to the authorities

do it `properly' and you will have a shiny new ticket to transmit legally

be a cowboy and expect to have trouble knocking on your door

Not like you need a license to buy a transmitter/receiver.

WRONG WRONG, WRONG AND MORE WRONG

Can I possibly make it any clearer???

possession of an unlicenced transmitter is in most places a big no no- at least a big fine, some places it will land you in jail

certainly any decent amateurs will quickly report you (and if you do it on the lower bands, you will probably be reported from around the world)

I don't know about "Down Under" but I've never read and FCC rule or reg that limits buying a transmitter to licensed amateurs and have NEVER been asked if I was licensed when buying one.

OK you ham-tards, what do we buy if we just want to listen in?

wrong approach
should read

sadly just because you dont read, doesnt mean they dont exist...the ARRL has many webpages just for people like you that seem to have the impression that you can buy and use anything you like
google FCC Part-15 Rules: Unlicensed RF Devices on air

that should keep you amused for several hours

I havent any 70cm gear, no one around here uses it

I do have to have a bit of a giggle at the `end of the worlders' getting all hot and bothered over that `magic' ham radio- considering that most seem to have difficulty with the concept of a switch that has both an on and an off position- can you imagine them trying to operate a shortwave rig successfully???

lower or upper side band- tuned with a bfo, on what band-1.5, 3.5, 7, 10, 14, 18, 21, 24.5, or 28- and thats just on the shortwave kenwood lol

altho the fcc did say that anyone caught with a transmitter that exceeded the mw level would be prosecuted- some morans sued about some `free speech' crap-last I heard it was tied up in the courts

imho- that whole `free speech' bs is getting old- everyone uses it to justify their latest illegal activities there is what I see from here

yea theres a buncha CBers that added "extra channels" to their radios and operate on the 10 meter ham band... (cbs are 11m)

also since the damn truckers dont know anything about matching impedences between feedline and antennas they have harmonics on teh 10m and 12m ham bands as well... we are doing what we can to rectify the situation

my city has a radio interference council and have caught a few people operating on the ham bands illegally...
