Grass tetany occurs most frequently in the spring, often following a cool period (temperatures between 45 and 60°F) when grass is growing rapidly, but also is seen in the fall with new growth of cool season grass or wheat pastures. Typical signs of grass tetany begin with an uncoordinated gait and terminate with convulsions, coma, and death. Animals on pasture are often found dead without illness having been observed. Evidence of thrashing will usually be apparent around the cow if grass tetany is the cause of death. The prevention of grass tetany depends largely on avoiding conditions that cause it. Graze less susceptible animals on high risk pastures. Steers, heifers, dry cows, and cows with calves over 4 months old are less likely to develop tetany. The use of dolomite or high Mg limestone on pastures and including legumes in pasture mixes will decrease the incidence of tetany in grazing cattle. In areas where tetany frequently occurs, feed cows supplemental magnesium. Supplementation increases blood magnesium levels and alleviates much of the grass tetany problem. Adequate amounts of magnesium must be consumed on a daily basis. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To ask a question about a cattle disease, CLICK HERE and get an answer! Anonymous Coward User ID: 18050048 United States 06/23/2012 02:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ok WTF! grass is not a cyanide fixing plant, let alone cyanide gas emitting, This is a much more likely candidate for the source of the mass dy-offs of late. cyanide gas coming from grass seems to me a huge load of shit. I am not aware of any mechanism in nature that could result in this. Sure there are quite a few hydrogen cyanide fixing plants in nature (and they are beneficial to gold prospectors) However this just sounds like total bullshit. Enough cyanide gas to kill a 1200 lb animal would not just be localized to the field, it dosn't care about crossing fences. I of course am going to research this, but can anyone explain a mechanism in which grass could produce cyanide gas in sufficient quantities to kill a 1200 lb beast? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14106983 don't be a dick. i am a vegan and a firm supporter as such, but it is not a natural diet (although done properly, a very very healthy one. and most people eat WAY too little vegetation).. it is a response to the unnaturalness of the meat/dairy mega corp industry and this screwed up society. as some one else pointed out, the problem is in the vegetation, thus in the soil, thus we are all screwed. i will still be a vegan because choosing what to put in ones own body is THE only control on has, and even that is well limited. it is one of the major forms of protest against our current society, and what it has become. which is why the masses are taught to hate/fear us. why would you feed into this problem by being an egomaniac? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7329106 Run from the wind kiddies. Try and run from the wind. ? I'm vegan, and just saying it's hard to avoid Monsanto foods or the result of Monsanto foods (propagation)...I think that unless someone finds virgin seeds and can make their vegetarian/vegan food grow underground in a super sterile environment, or at least in a sterile grow house, it will be impossible to avoid a similar demise due to Monsanto's idiocy. Many people worry about war and blah blah blah. I worry about the safety of my own food supply. Will it kill me? My children? My grandchildren? Unfortunately, I'm young enough and that means I could be a great grandma one day with my great grandchildren completely incapable of reproduction. =/ |
