Hydrogen fuel cells require three times more energy than an EV equipped with a battery. With hydrogen, you will need to build at least 10's of thousands (initially) of fueling stations nationwide just to get the technology off the ground. There are batteries that can give an EV range of around 100-200 miles. A typical driver drives less than 30 miles a day and if they need to travel farther... there are always trains, buses, and airplanes. If they prefer to drive long distances, then rent a car or use the second car from the household that they live in.
