I would get it pulled. A crown or root canal only lasts so long. If you can afford it, get the tooth yanked and get an implant.

i had 3 of them done correctly and no worse than getting fillings---3 molars
and i couldn't afford the caps so they were simply filled
and they lasted almost 30 years and most likely WOULD HAVE lasted longer, except the damn gum disease progressed to new LOWS -LOL-
leaving the root wide open to either one getting an infection and the others simply had way tooooo much root exposed and man, that HURT-- then they were extracted-

had the posts and all holding things together and more "lead" than a .22 in them and ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS.

I have a crowned tooth, which cost me $1,500, that now needs a root canal and a new crown, at an additional $2,000. I wish I just had it yanked in the 1st place.

IF you can get the implant done, just get rid of the bad tooth, and spare yourself a lot of pain and money.

Re: Root Canals (And Other Fun Stuff...)
I had my first root canal this year. I really didn't want to for a long time because I read so many bad things about root canals. I had read they brought on chronic auto-immune type illnesses. So I searched the Edgar Cayce files to see if anyone ever asked him about root canals. One person told Edgar that his dentist wanted him to have a procedure called a "root canal" and asked if it would be okay to do this. Edgar (in his trance state) said yes.
So for me that helped clear the way to have it done.

It took 3 hours and it was painful but I am one of those people that must have nerves in strange places because the dentist always has to give me additional novocaine shots to get me numb. There is a lot more drilling than with a filling plus they put something in there to disinfect the tooth and it tastes like you have chlorine in your mouth. Mine turned out okay I guess. I don't have anymore nerve pain, but a woman I know told me her husband has had to have some of his root canals redone.

Well, I went there yesterday and though it wasn't all that bad, the dentist said she wanted to wait before filling it because of infection. So I have to go back in about a month to complete 'phase 2', hehe...

They kept taking x-rays to ensure that they got the entire root. She was very no nonsense and confident through the whole process. I think it's so far, so good to this point.

The were very impressed with the length of my roots, haha!

Re: Root Canals (And Other Fun Stuff...)
Root canal part II was a great success.

The dentist who performed the procedure, an Indian woman, did a spectacular job. I think some of the information that I learned here helped in keeping her on her toes with me.

Instead of putting on a full crown, she thought that the tooth structure and it's placement in my mouth only required a partial crown, which reduced my bill a full $1,000.00.

Now I'm sure that there are many others who would have gone through the motions and just put the full crown on anyways to reap the financial benefits, like a lot of the experiences in this thread. So I would recommend these guys on their honesty alone, although her skills as I remarked to her after the procedure were very impressive.

Depends if its an endodontist or dentist. Endodontists are faster. It's not bad. I read the stuff about root canals being bacteria havens. I opted to keep the teeth.

Luckily I didnt get infected, so no need for the anti-biotics, which was nice. You really shouldn't take them if at all possible as the kill the 'good bacteria' your body does need. Still have to wait and see for a bit before I'm all clear as far as infections go.
