As Colorado Burns, Obama Cuts Firefighting Aircraft

and two years ago the Republicans cut federal funding for firefighters, face it neither side gives a hoot about us.

Firefighters are usually local. Not sure what federal fudning you are talking about but now every time anybody calls 9-1-1, here comes a huge fire truck. Even for ambulance calls and medical emergiencies.

I have been told it's a "first responder" union thing so that taxpayers end up paying both fire and ambulance every time Gramdpa falls out of bed.

WHAT DID COLORADO DO TO OBAMA???

I BET THERE IS AN ANSWER IN THAT QUESTION!!!

He could take the money it's going to cost the taxpayers for him to fly there in AirForce1 on Friday, and the cost of the Secret Service protecting him there, and pay for more firefighting aircraft...

Isn't it the Republicans who are baying for cuts to social spending!!

Fires go out when they want to . The Maffs are over rated and air craft put on an air show. They rarely do much to put out huge forest fires. The military is just using the fires to justify their programs. The air craft are the most visible ,so the public thinks they actually are putting the fire out. It is boots on the ground that count .

Military planes used to fight fires are hardly "social" spending.

The White House is not his to sell. It is his campaigning that is resulting in his trip which is totally unnecessary. I don't think he knows squat about fighting fires.

Well, I had a firefighter tell me yesterday just the opposite. H sais a fire that size had to have aerial suport or it would not be contained until it ran out of things to burn.

So I don't know what to believe. But I think the MAFFS are definitely needed with a fire this large.

Given all the stimulus money and the amounts being thrown around on all manner of wastful stuff by this administration and the previous one, it would seem SOMETHING would be in place for dealing with these massive fires better than telling people to run like hell.

It wouldn't matter if they had 30 or 40 additional MAFFS on huge fires of this size and type. The USFS has had problems with large air tankers so have gone to more and larger helicopters . All the military or Obama has to do is change priorities on what they want their fleet of c130's doing. This headline is a typical ploy by the Military Industrial Complex and the Obamatards. I would love to hear an excuse form the military as to why a few less aircraft leads to "we can't help the poor citizens of Colorado".If only I had a few more C130's none of this would have happened".

Well, given that I'm in Colorado Springs, I'll speak to this.

The MAFFS have made little difference and they cannot do all that much good in terrain like Colorado's. They cannot maneuver valleys and deal with mountainsides.

Frankly, given the fact that we had C-130s running all day yesterday, and our city still burned ... well, eh. The helicopters and smaller Conairs have done WAY more good than these C-130s.

Just my observation, from the front line.

It makes no sense to blame the opposite party for Obama's Defense cuts.

But then one excuse is just about as good as another, isn't it?

These fires are nothing new and by now there should be in place a course of action for dealing with them.

The Air Force is taking the largest of the defense cuts so I don't know about availability of the helicopters, but whatever works!

I just hate to see so little being done.

BTW, I lived on North Cascade and attenede Colorado College a couple of years a long time ago.

Beautiful city and so sad to think of so much of it burning. I pray the people will be safe.

AND, make more bombs too, tanks guns and bullets to protect our country.

I can only assume you consider it "so little being done" because they didn't put it out right away.

Unfortunately, nature trumps us most of the time. What happened yesterday was absolutely an act of unfortunate circumstances for people who live up against the wild forest lands, but it WAS nature at work.

There is NOT "so little being done." We have over 1000 boots on the ground fighting this now, in addition to more helicopters and smaller aircraft than you can count in one visual sweep of the mountains. However, when winds come up or smoke clouds vision, they HAVE to ground aircraft (and the first to be grounded are these C-130s).

People on the ground can only do so much, and we can only have so many aircraft maneuvering the sky at one time. Sometimes we can't even have that, because of nature's behavior.

Our fire, in particular, is THE number one priority fire in the entire country. THE number one priority. So MUCH is being done, but only so much CAN be done.

Unfortunately.

Well, it's great to know that all that can be done is being done and there is nothing more anybody can do.

Very rare in a disaster of this size.

Meteorite report grounds firefighting aircraft in Colorado

Authorities say reports of a possible meteorite or meteor shower briefly grounded firefighting aircraft battling a central Colorado wildfire.

Meteorologist Scott Entrekin of the National Weather Service says emergency officials in Chafee County reported a possible meteor in the skies near the Springer Fire. They briefly grounded four single-engine aircraft fighting the 1,100-acre blaze west of Colorado Springs.

Entrekin said Wednesday that the crews of two commercial aircraft flying over Liberal, Kan., reported what appeared to be a meteorite at 12:47 p.m. MDT. He said the Colorado sighting occurred at about the same time.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it has no confirmed reports of a meteorite. It says there were no reported disruptions to commercial airlines.

Only in the Pentagon does he want cuts. Plenty of money for any and everybody else in the world, however.

It's strange how opinions can vary. However, Obama has been hamstrung by the Republicans and that has been pretty much public.

I am by no means an admirer of any capitalist politician but where one supports and votes for particular outcomes, one should live with the consequences. Obama is by no means an austerity man coming from the wing of capitalist managers who are Keynesian. The Republicans on the other hand are the cost cutters.

Lets at least get that right.
