Will Obamacare make healthcare cheaper?
Right now, don't a lot of uninsured low-income people go to hospital emergency rooms and get treated, then the hospitals have to suck up the bills and load them onto other people because they can't pay them? Won't requiring people to have insurance stop this practice?

Re: Will Obamacare make healthcare cheaper?
Yes, BUT the fact that insurance companies have to accept pre-existing conditions will negate the value of that. Plus, the fine costs less than insurance so many will choose to pay the fine and they'll still go to the hospital just like they do now. In the end it will cost more, much more. So much in fact that private insurance companies will be a thing of the past most likely. It is the goal ultimately to have a single payer system. This is just step one...

Re: Will Obamacare make healthcare cheaper?
Why do hospitals have to treat people who come to them if they can't pay for it? I am not meaning to be cruel. I'm just trying to figure this out. I assume there must have been some government mandate requiring them to care for people who don't have money?

I did notice that the penalty is less than the insurance, so it basically won't cause people to get insurance ...

I actually can't believe all the money that is wasted on health care. I hope I am brave enough when I am near the end to forgo excessive treatment so that thousands aren't spent needlessly prolonging my life when I am going to die anyway.

Because Congress passed a law like 30 years ago saying they had to treat everyone. They also allow hospitals and health insurance companies to do things that are not allowed for real businesses, like charging more for other people to pay for the ones who can't pay in the ER. The amount the insurance companies pay for care is not what you see on your bill. In fact in many cases it just happens to be about the same as your deductible. So you pay your insurance premiums and then your hospital bill and insurance make pure profit.

Myabe what needs to be done is for the law to be repealed that requires hospitals to treat all people. Then more people would get insurance.

ARE YOU NUTZ???

It will make the cost increase by a factor of at least 4.

Take what you pay now and multiply it by 4 and that will be about what it will end up being...

No. Low income people will not have to buy insurance. They will still get free shit that the rest of us have to pay for.

+1... Absolutely. People have yet to see true efficiency in the health care system. I feel these new policies will make health care more affordable, and create a sense of equality among Americans and our foreign guests.
All this has happened before, and will happen again.

You don't have to just feel it, the data bears it out. Government payments are the only reliable payments that hospitals and insurers can count on collecting. People say what they will about rugged individualism, but the fact is people don't pay. No healthcare provider or insurer is going to argue that getting paid for all of the services provided is a bad idea.

Because the Neotard Reagan said:
Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

It makes me sick that so many idiots worship Reagan as a "fine conservative." Pfff. Whatever. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act is total bullshit and it should have been repealed long ago. Poor fucks can take their asses to the county hospital like did before this shit passed.

That is so true. Sometimes I feel like the vanguard of social reform and progress here, so I appreciate your comments. The fact is the government does pay.
