Take a hat, preferably wide brim, something crush proof... or at least a baseball cap. The guides might let you take off the helmet through the non-rapid sections and you'll be glad to have it. Useful on the side canyon hikes too assuming they catch some sun. Only desert rookies go without. Read John Wesley Powell's "The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons" before you go, if you get a chance.

First white man through the canyon, no maps, wooden dories, one arm... MOST of those on the expedition made it through alive.

Well,...I am wearing a nice wide-brim as I type this. Guess I'll take it. I saw a IMAX presentation of Powell's trek 20 years ago when I hiked into the canyon. Crazy adventurer loving folks involved in that. Thank you kindly.

Good luck, stay safe and have fun. Let's hope there's some civilisation for you to come back to in 2 weeks!

Oddly enough,...when I get back I have to go directly into the wilderness.

That's my job.

Sweet!

Can't believe I am going really. It has not sunk in yet. Some of the oldest exposed geology in the world down there.

Kinda like going deep into the past.

I don't know if this was mentioned already, but water purification tables/liquid and a good size pot to boil water in.

An exciting and fun adventure can quickly go to crap without enough drinking/washing water.

Boil the water you wash with too. There are plenty of pathogens in the river there and it's best to be safe.

Oh, a 5-pack of Bic lighters would probably be nice to have too. (kept inside 3 zip-lock bags)

I could never go one of these touristy raft trips unless it was with a group that I knew.

I can picture all the fat asses out of shape bobing and weaving up and down barely padding looking like they are about to pass out and the Guide Screaming
PADDDDDDLE!!!!! LOL

FAK that I'm not putting my life in someones fat ass hands that decided they wanted and "adventure" but never go outside, never paddle a boat before, and are afraid of Coons

Re: Going on a 2-week rafting trip through the Grand Canyon,...
Advice from a class 4 kayaker and somtimes rafter. Try to stay in the raft, if surfed in a hole stay low and move quickly to the high side(usually downstream side) when the upstream side starts to drop, the raft may spin many times in a hole, so, just keep moving to the hight side. If ejected and you end up swimming, keep your feet up and leading the way downstream. If you hit any rocks try not to hit em with your head.

A/C what advise do you have for a group of out of shape rafters that have never being on a raft and can barely breath going up a flight of stairs. Would you get on a raft with a group like that?

That'd depend on the class of rapids (conseqences for missed lines/mistakes). Any serious consequences would mean a big "no way". This is why I only sometimes raft, and prefer to solo hardboat the hairy stuff.

So in other words you would not risk your life unless you were with a group of other capable paddlers. Because out of shape tourists rafters do not or are NOT capable of paddling efficiently and fast when the guide says Paddle, Paddle, Paddle. Risking your life!!!

Bingo. The only raft I've been in is privately owned and with a group of fellow members of our kayak/canoe club.

Thank you this applies to so many things. I go fishing, hiking and camping and people sometimes ask me to take them out fishing when I take them out they are afraid to touch the live bait, unhook fish and is such a buzz kill. It's cool with kids because you can pass down a skill and most are eager to learn and will try their best. When a full grown adult tells me that's disgusting, your going to eat that, I don't want to touch the bait because they are so detached by reality and rather buy some nasty farmed grown fish is not cute anymore but fucking annoying.

You could not pay me to take a group of out of shape people, that are not into outdoors, hiking, fishing and camping. I don't want a hook thru my eye, have to carry someone else pack, or people screaming in the middle of the night because they hear a deer near the camp.

Same thing goes with Paddle,Paddle,Paddle If the fat fucks run out of gas and can't paddle and you slam against a rock and flip and they start climbing onto you to save them!!!. I'm not risking my life.
