What if you needed an organ? Your mom? Dad? Grandparent? What if you had to watch someone suffer in the hospital because there were no donars and they DIED because someone was too attached to their liver or too worried that they would pull the plug on you early?

The story about the car accident kid was a rare case, OBVIOUSLY no one wants to die early but think about this in the scheme of things: you could save someones life! And the boy lived didn't he??? He was in such bad shape, the doctor was THINKING LOGICALLY. But hey, the kid's dad was there right?? Annnnnd they did everything they could, RIGHT? So he ended up living.

Stop being selfish bastards and believing everything you hear. Take the time to put the pieces together before deciding what kind of person you want to be. (a.k.a a selfish prick or a thoughtful individual)

I've waited 3 years for a kidney transplant, and get the joy of dialysis 3 days a week totalling 15 hours on top of the 50-60 hours I work normally. I'm not old, I'm only 30 and this all stems back to a rare disease I've had since childhood, I didn't choose this. Organ failure continues to plague more and more people everday. I am thankful to anyone who is willing to give up a part of their body to save anothers. Don't focus purely on the "evil" side. One day you might be the one in need.

I have heard many true stories of people who got in bad car accidents, and they are doing fine today.

Here is an example of why you shouldn't donate organs. They have to take your organs when you are still alive!!

Two young boys got in a bad car accident. The driver was dead and the passenger side guy was rushed to the hospital and the specialists said that there was so little brain activity (coma), that we'd like to take his organs.

The father of the boy said he'd like a second opinion. He got it from a regular family practitioner. The doctor recommended that he be put on life support. In a week the boy was out of his coma and was 98%fully recovered. Later the boy went to college and got a degree in accounting and is enjoying a full life. So THINK TWICE before you put ORGAN DONAR on your driver's license. Your just asking for them to kill you when you might just as well have a second chance!!!

I'm an organ donor... I don't really care what happens to my physical body in the end... What' a couple of organs between friends?

here in Wales we have to OPT OUT of being a donor. come september, if you don't opt out, you will be AUTOMATICALLY harvested of your organs upon dying, or as has been said, being CLOSE to death..

imagine the scenario.... some mega rich sheik in Dubai needs a liver, urgently, you have a moderate car accident, you're in a coma, induced, then suddenly, wow, you're a MATCH for Abdul Al Headchoppa, and he wants to give the hospital 25 million quid for your liver....cut to the relatives, weeping in the waiting room, as the specialist tells them there is no more they can do for their loved one, with even a little crocodile tear in his eye, for effect...

Perhaps this will become mandatory like so many other things under healthcare by government.

Certainly nothing to prevent it nor much of anything else now.

Years ago someone very close to me was shot. He was in critical condition due to blood loss, but then stabilized. One of the bullets didn't exit, for some reason they didn't do the proper scan to see where it was. Once stabilized they told his family he would make it and to go home and rest and come back in the morning. They barely got home when they got the call that the bullet still in traveled to his brain.

Ass soon as they arrived at the hospital they were told there was no hope, he will be brain dead, a vegetable, PS - can we have his organs. This was a Sunday night. Nobody suggested a specialist or second opinion, just take our word and give us his organs. After putting it to his mother like "He wouldn't want to be kept alive by machines, would he?" she agreed.

Immediately the medication and process of trying to save his life stopped and medication to keep the organs going until they could "harvest" was started. Within an hour of this decision the organ procurement company was shooting off letters thanking the doctors for the referral. He was moved out of ICU and into a holding room to wait for the procedure to happen.

On Monday his family was allowed into the room to say goodbye. On of them told me they were under the impression that he was dead and was surprised that he was alive looked a bit better than the day before. Something didn't feel right about the situation but he didn't know what.

In the report one of the nurses reported to a doctor that she saw movement and heard sounds that made her feel he should be checked out and reassessed. The doctor told her that her mind was probably playing tricks on her and that he was no longer a patient of the hospital anyway, but of the procurement company. From the time the decision was made it was more than 24 hours before whoever came to do what they do.

To top it off his mother got large bill for the blood that was given to him even though family members that regularly donated blood did so in his name, being told that if he ever needed blood there would be no charge.

I have no idea what his outcome would have been. Nobody wanted to see him on a machine indefinitely but I think a few days to see what was really going on should be required. And opinions of multiple doctors.

I don't think most people that sign up to be a donor upon death or that speak for a family member in dire condition know how this process really works.

Organ donation today includes SKIN! Read the fine print on the organ donation form to see what organs and tissue and any other parts they are allowed to take. Don't assume anything these days.

and no one bats an eye at people like David Rockefeller or Dick Cheney who have had multiple heart transplants...its hard to find one heart that can match let along multiples and they all just so happened to be readily available...lol
