Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
It's possible this kitten has some congenital defect and won't make it. Often the mother cat/dog knows this well in advance and so won't invest the effort to sustain one they know they are going to lose anyway or think they only want to invest in the stronger ones.

However if you could feed it something like cat milk replacement with a syringe (no needle of course) you might save it yourself. She will probably continue to try to remove it from her "better" litter and may take drastic actions if you continue to replace it with the others.

I'd just try feeding it myself. You can get the cat milk replacement from any vet.
 Quoting: Bluebird

This exactly!

Mother cats will usually perform a formal cat-scan on the litter.
When the babies are born she licks each kitten clean. Her tongue gives off a magnetic field and the special sensors in the mother cat's nasal canal sends a perfect picture in her brain of her kittens insides. She will check for bone structure, brain development, and organ health.
When the mother cat licks off the meconium her taste buds will check for thyroid function, liver chemicals and kidney function.
If she finds a defect she will not waste valuable milk on a sickly kitten.

i had a momma cat back in the day, she ate one of her kittens (the runt) but nursed the rest... so if she rejects it, talk to your vet and see if they have / know of any kitties that just had a litter and might be able to wet nurse if it will accept it

I think OP is trolling and trying to get people upset by leaving a kitten to die when he could take it to the vet. I don't think there is a kitten and this thread is just a lie.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Take the normal kittens and put them in a soft place to sleep for a few hours.

Then place the mom and the baby in a box together where the mom cannot get out.

This will allow the mom some time with the baby to bond and the baby will not have to struggle against all the other kittens to nurse.

Ive seen runts before in kitten batches and this is what I do to make them stronger.

It wont hurt the other kittens to be away from the mom for a bit they will just sleep.

And it will give the runt time to gain the strength it needs.

Usually its harder for the runt to nurse because the other kittens all crowd the good spots.

But if you give it this extra time alone with the mom it will soon be able to hold its own.

Also some of you who are saying that I don't care about the kitten are dead wrong. You know why?

My wife was there when they were born. She dragged me in the laundry room to watch it. Disgusting. But Also kind of cool though.

My wife loves these cats. Im hoping she won't notice if one of them is gone because - what do I tell her if she does?

So i dont want it to do. I don't want to have to have that conversation with my wife. She'll get all wierd about it.

So take the kitten to a vet or even to a shelter. There are people on call who will take that kitten.

Ok, maybe I was out of line calling you an idiot. Sorry. Call your wife, she'll be able to help you do what you need to do. She might even have everything you need to feed the kitten. Trust me on this, she WILL notice right away that a kitten is missing. Don't make me take back my apology.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Either the mom isn't producing enough milk to fed all, thus has selected one to die, or there is something wrong with it and being sick she is trying to save the rest by getting rid of the kit.

I would strongly suggest taking the kit to the vet. Make an appointment first explaining to them you have this kit that mom refuses to feed/care for. To take it in you need to put in in a comfy, warm towel and make certain you leave home at a time that you will arrive at vet and be seen promptly. You don't want to be sitting around with a kit on your lap for an hour, this puts it at risk for infections in the waiting room. Kits, pups, babies of all species are very vulnerable to infectious diseases as their immune systems are not fully developed.

Most likely you will discover that this kit is 'healthy' - but you should rule out disease in case it is infectious disease, thus you can take proper quarantine procedures to prevent the rest of the litter from being sick.

You will, most likely discover that you will be mommy for this kitten. You will most likely have to bottle feed it and tend it like the mommy cat should.

Bottle fed kits and pups and other critters tend to become highly bonded with the human who tends them in infancy. As such, expect this particular cat to be the one you keep.

Yeah you did the right thing by leaving the kitten food it is unable to eat.
You might as well of not left any at all.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
I had a dog who would not nurse her pups. Lost a few as I struggled getting them to take the bottle. Then I learned a trick that saved the rest of the litter... the warmth of the mother has to be simulated or the puppies will not feed. Use a heating pad or any type of microwave warming bag to lay puppy/kitty on while giving them the bottle. Hope this helps someone out.

There's no one who thinks it's okay to flush a kitten, and even if there was, theres no one dumb enough to think they can crush up cat food for a newborn kitten.

Op is a lame, bad troll.

This happens sometimes, a mother cat will reject a weaker kitten to let it die. You could get some formula and feed it yourself...or keep encouraging momma cat to feed it? Please consider getter her spayed so she has no more kittens. :)

I agree :) kitten milk from the pet store and pick up a few of the bottles. Remember cause this kitten is so small that you get the right nipple for it. You will also have to help the little kitten go to the bathroom. Also I would definitley keep trying to get the mamma to take care of it. Good luck OP. also just remember this kitten will need to be fed every 3 hrs or so...

I dont think the mamma wants anything to do with it.

Im not good with these things. I don't know the first thing about this stuff.

My wife handles all this stuff. She's great with our cats. The mother IS her cat. She's had cats her whole life. She doesn't know whats going on with the runt and I haven't told her. Don't want to upset her.

She'll be back by the 4th. Maybe the poor little thing can hold out till then? I'll dump it in a carboard box. And put it in the same room as the rest of the cats until then.

My wife will handle it when she gets back. This is her territory.

Take the kitten to the nearest vet, tell them you found it abandoned in your front yard most vets will take it and give it to a rehabber for proper care. If you tell them it isn't yours and you have no way to care for it most vets will take it in.
Too bad your human mother didn't discard your sorry ass and your daddy didn't toss his hands up like your doing without a fricken try. Such a worthless man.

Someone did this a while back. Everyone was so helpful telling them each step in taking care of kitty and pleading for them to not flush it down the toilet. He went through the "going to give it some cat chow" thing too.LOL.It ended with him saying, "never mind, I flushed it down the toilet". He did have the decency though to say he was just trolling.

If you get too upset with this guy, tell his wife he's gay. This is his thread:

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
There are many ways to help the kitten. If you don't want to take the time to nuture it, please call a vet,the SPCA,or 24 hour emergency vet hospital or a no kill shelter. Someone will help. Or, you can buy a food dropper, use tepid milk(fresh milk, heated, but not scalding),wrap the kitty in a towel, and slowly open its mouth and trickle the milk into her/him. Don't overfeed. There is also kittty formula at some pet stores. Once you have established a routine, select one of the litter mates and hold it next to the runt while it feeds. They might bond;the mother might be more accepting. I took care of 7 kittens once...the mother was just a kitten herself and could not handle the feeding frenzy. All the cats grew into beautiful adults. All were placed into loving homes or barns, Don't give up!

OP, if you don't want to take care of it call a vet and ask if you can drop it off. Lots of vets will temporarily take lost dogs and cats and I'm sure they would rather take your kitten than let it die.
Or, take it to the Humane Society near you right away. They will save it.
You don't want to watch it suffer and die, do you?

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Know there are alot of animal people here so I thought I'd ask for some advice here.

Our cat recently had a litter of 4 kittens. They are the cutest things! Every one has been nursing every day and getting stronger except the littlest one (a runt). It tries worm its way in and nurse but the mother cat doesnt let it! Worse, our cat now physically removes the little kitten and hides it far from the rest. I can't believe this! I found it shivering and just lying under the sink today. I put it back but I don't know what to do! The wee little thing fits in my palm, all sick, shivering, whispy fur. Tiny thing. What do I do? The wife usually takes care of this stuff but she's away.

Are these things suppossed to die?

What am I supposed to do??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11297503

There is something wrong with the kitten and the mother knows it will die. It is hard to raise an abandoned kitten, I tried and it died anyhow.
