Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Know there are alot of animal people here so I thought I'd ask for some advice here.

Our cat recently had a litter of 4 kittens. They are the cutest things! Every one has been nursing every day and getting stronger except the littlest one (a runt). It tries worm its way in and nurse but the mother cat doesnt let it! Worse, our cat now physically removes the little kitten and hides it far from the rest. I can't believe this! I found it shivering and just lying under the sink today. I put it back but I don't know what to do! The wee little thing fits in my palm, all sick, shivering, whispy fur. Tiny thing. What do I do? The wife usually takes care of this stuff but she's away.

Are these things suppossed to die?

What am I supposed to do??

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11297503

You need to act fast with this: I did this with four kittens and you only have one to concentrate on, so that part is good. The problem is that he is very very young and is very fragile: Got to Petco, Petsmart, Pet Supermarket , whereever you can and get powered KMR which is Newborn Kitten Milk Replacement. you mix it with water ( directions on can ) and get the little kitten baby bottle kit, with little cleaning brushes. If you go to a big pet store they will help you find this stuff.

Go to www.safehavenforcats.com , kittenbaby.com, or go to aspca.org ( with aspca put KITTEN in search box ) and you will find all kinds of directions on how to care and feed for a new born kittne. You can also call your vet and the girls at the desk will usually have good info for you, too.

You will end up feeding this little baby probably every hour or two 24 hours...like, you have to set your alarm and get up and feed him every two hours. And he must be kept VERY WARM, like get a heating pad and put him in a warm place. It would be nice if he could be in the same room as mom and other siblings but make sure its WARM, like toasty for him.

Good luck, its a lot of work but worth it. Ideally, I would take him to the vet right away and get him checked out, but if you don't have the financial resources for this, at least these directiosn will get you started. Please keep us posted.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
It's possible this kitten has some congenital defect and won't make it. Often the mother cat/dog knows this well in advance and so won't invest the effort to sustain one they know they are going to lose anyway or think they only want to invest in the stronger ones.

However if you could feed it something like cat milk replacement with a syringe (no needle of course) you might save it yourself. She will probably continue to try to remove it from her "better" litter and may take drastic actions if you continue to replace it with the others.

I'd just try feeding it myself. You can get the cat milk replacement from any vet.
 Quoting: Bluebird

you can get it in any quality pet food store. I did. lost the kitten anyway, but it was too late. it was not healthy from birth.

How about letting life takes its course. Leave the kitten around a known Coon or Possum area. Two things will happen: Either the Coon adopts the kitten and helps it grow up or what most likely would happen is that a vicious coon will dispatch it and eat it.

This happens sometimes, a mother cat will reject a weaker kitten to let it die. You could get some formula and feed it yourself...or keep encouraging momma cat to feed it? Please consider getter her spayed so she has no more kittens. :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7532892

I agree :) kitten milk from the pet store and pick up a few of the bottles. Remember cause this kitten is so small that you get the right nipple for it. You will also have to help the little kitten go to the bathroom. Also I would definitley keep trying to get the mamma to take care of it. Good luck OP. also just remember this kitten will need to be fed every 3 hrs or so...

obviously have a very tender spirit to be so
concerned. If you decide to intervene on behalf
of this little one--a heads up on feeding.
A kitten this young only has the instinct to
suck, so just placing it next to a bowl of
milk wont work at all.
Also, BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET FLUID INTO THE
KITTEN'S LUNGS. iF YOU FORCE-FEED TOO FAST
THE KITTY WILL INHALE THE FLUID AND GET PNUEMONIA.

I had this problem with a little dog... The mother didn't want him...

the solution was to cover the puppie with worm milk with sugar and put it close to the mother she started to lick him and then she took it back it was a cuestion of the smell

I don't if it works for cats I'm not much of a cat person

Why is it that every time someone mentions cats all you hear is spayed, spayed, get it spayed. shut the fuck up already. I'm sure OP is smart enough to make his own decisions, he clearly asked about help for his little baby kitten, not weather he should get his cat spayed or not. People like you are moronic idiots...

No, clearly you are the idiot here.

If he would have gotten his cat spayed he wouldn't be having this problem in the first place.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Go to petsmart and get some milk replacer and a bottle. You can likely nurse it yourself. You'll need to keep it warm so wrap it in a washcloth when you feed it and keep it warm - use a heating pad if necessary.

I've raised a ton of kittens on bottles. It will make a wonderful pet because it will bond to you so much.

Don't be afraid to make a rather large opening in the nipple of the bottle at first. It may be weak if she's not been feeding it. In a couple of days when it gets stronger it will suck harder so you'll need a smaller hole in the nipple (you'll get more than one with the bottle).

It's not that hard, you'll do fine...

It could be sick so the mother doesn't want to give it any care. We had a cat that abandoned a whole litter, and got bottles and milk to feed the little guys. They all made it to maturity and lived healthy lives. Warmth and food is pretty much all they need.
 Quoting: shame_spiral

I don't know anything about feeding kittens! This one doesn't look like it can even feed! It's so cruel to just watch it slowly starve though. It must be in so much pain. I hate watching this happen. Wouldn't it be better to flush it down the toliet?

Sounds like it is weak and/or sick so the mother is leaving it alone to pass. You can take the kitten on yourself and wrap it and keep it warm. You can buy kitten formula or you can google how to make it yourself. You would need to take care of the kitten as you would an infant, make sure it is warm and feed it every two hours. You can google more information as well.

The hardest thing with trying to raise a rejected kitten is you have to keep it warm because its own "thermostat" isn't working yet and you have to rub its butt and genital area with a warm wet washcloth to make it per and poop. Man those mother cats have to work hard!

If you can't/won't take care of it, get on the phone, asap, as in now, and call the local animal shelters, tell them you can't take care of it, mother is rejecting, can they take it and put it with a nursing cat; otherwise it will die.

Please at least call until you find someone willing to take it on. Or do as poster suggest and surprise your wife when she gets home, look honey, I saved the runt. She'll adore you for life, she'll never forgive you if she finds out you deliberately just let it die.

If my husband can nurse a baby Robin that came out of its nest with peach fuzz, and keep it alive (I helped) and teach it by hand to hunt for worms/food, I think you can handle a kitten. My husband became quite attached to that bird until one day it finally flew off for good.

You could just feed the kitty, then put back in with the rest, not to over handle, and have it continue to bond with other kittens/mom.

Think how would you feel starving to death?
Just because it's a runt doesn't necessarily mean it's sickly. Sometimes the runts outgrow the bigger ones!
