Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Know there are alot of animal people here so I thought I'd ask for some advice here.

Our cat recently had a litter of 4 kittens. They are the cutest things! Every one has been nursing every day and getting stronger except the littlest one (a runt). It tries worm its way in and nurse but the mother cat doesnt let it! Worse, our cat now physically removes the little kitten and hides it far from the rest. I can't believe this! I found it shivering and just lying under the sink today. I put it back but I don't know what to do! The wee little thing fits in my palm, all sick, shivering, whispy fur. Tiny thing. What do I do? The wife usually takes care of this stuff but she's away.

Are these things suppossed to die?

What am I supposed to do??

It could be sick so the mother doesn't want to give it any care. We had a cat that abandoned a whole litter, and got bottles and milk to feed the little guys. They all made it to maturity and lived healthy lives. Warmth and food is pretty much all they need.

This happens sometimes, a mother cat will reject a weaker kitten to let it die. You could get some formula and feed it yourself...or keep encouraging momma cat to feed it? Please consider getter her spayed so she has no more kittens. :)

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
It's possible this kitten has some congenital defect and won't make it. Often the mother cat/dog knows this well in advance and so won't invest the effort to sustain one they know they are going to lose anyway or think they only want to invest in the stronger ones.

However if you could feed it something like cat milk replacement with a syringe (no needle of course) you might save it yourself. She will probably continue to try to remove it from her "better" litter and may take drastic actions if you continue to replace it with the others.

I'd just try feeding it myself. You can get the cat milk replacement from any vet.

I don't know anything about feeding kittens! This one doesn't look like it can even feed! It's so cruel to just watch it slowly starve though. It must be in so much pain. I hate watching this happen. Wouldn't it be better to flush it down the toliet?

Milk delivered into mouth, there are droppers and bottles small enough to help. Hold its mouth open gently at the sides if need be. You can use any milk at all, it won't hurt the cat. It just needs calories to grow. Give it a fighting chance before you just kill it.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
Op, it doesn't look good for your little one. If a mama puts the kitten away from the rest of the litter, there is something wrong with the baby. You can try giving it goats milk with an eye dropper. Make sure the milk is warm, not hot. If you've ever fed a baby a bottle and tested the milk on your wrist, that's the temp. You shouldn't feel it as hot or cold.

Only once was I able to save one of my kittens that was refused that way, but I know of others that have had better success. I have had really good luck with goats milk since then. Everyone will tell you fresh milk is best, and it is, but I don't have access to any. I get it from our grocery store, it comes in a quart carton in the milk aisle or condensed in a can where the rest of the canned milk is - usually in the baking aisle.

If you start to feed little one, it's a long haul of a job. Feedings every 20 minutes or so, day and night for quite awhile. Call your vet for advice and (hopefully) some help! You'll need it. Bless you for trying to help, but honestly, kitten is probably not going to make it. Having said all of that, miracles DO happen sometimes!

I agree :) kitten milk from the pet store and pick up a few of the bottles. Remember cause this kitten is so small that you get the right nipple for it. You will also have to help the little kitten go to the bathroom. Also I would definitley keep trying to get the mamma to take care of it. Good luck OP. also just remember this kitten will need to be fed every 3 hrs or so...

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
OP I've seen kitten milk at pet stores. Please go get some! Also a proper syringe for feeding. Call your vet too and see what they have to say. The person who answers the phone will probably know what to do so you won't have to pay anything if they are a caring receptionist. The poor little thing has to eat every few hours.

Two of my cats were rejected by their mother as babies I was told and raised by a foster mom - both are healthy now but one of them did have a serious blood disorder which has been fine now for the past few years.

Good luck !!

Guys, the crap formula from the pet stores doesn't work and the nipples on the bottles are WAY to big for a new kitten. I know, I've tried them. If you can get a syringe without the needle, that's best. You won't drown the baby. Eye droppers are easier to get. Watch out for cows milk too, it can give them diarhea.

So you are considering flushing it down the toilet because you are too lazy to go to the pet store to get a kitten bottle and some formula?

If you have the ability to visit GLP I'm sure you have the know how on how to find a website to instruct you in ways to encourage the kitten to feed.

At least try to feed it, and for heaven's sake don't flush it down the toilet.

Im not good with these things. I don't know the first thing about this stuff.

My wife handles all this stuff. She's great with our cats. The mother IS her cat. She's had cats her whole life. She doesn't know whats going on with the runt and I haven't told her. Don't want to upset her.

She'll be back by the 4th. Maybe the poor little thing can hold out till then? I'll dump it in a carboard box. And put it in the same room as the rest of the cats until then.

My wife will handle it when she gets back. This is her territory.

Op

One thing no one mentioned - the kitten also has to be bath roomed, as well as fed.

It probably needs that now, if the mom has not been taking care of it.

If you feed it, it will still die if you dont bath room it.

Why post for help when this is the solution? Seriously? Do something now, it won't live if it doesn't eat. And even though it is 'her' cat, imagine if you will the amount of suffering you are inflicting on a defenseless animal by denying it care. If the mother won't do it, you should do it. It's your responsibility since it's in your care. Just letting something die is unnecessary, lazy, and just plain heartless. Grow up.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
They-mother cats will do that to the runt sometimes. You will need to get a feeding tube and kitty milk at a store. Call a pet store. You need to get a move on and start feeding that kitten yourself or she/he will die.

Don't count on mama cat to take it back in to feed. You need to take the responsibility to feed the runt baby yourself. This is just nature and in the wild, that kitten would die. But since it has you to help it-get that kitten feeding kit and get busy, new kitty mama. You can do it. Read the instructions really carefully because their stomachs are really tiny and you don't want to overfill the kitten and make it uncomfortable or harm it. You put the feeding tube down the kittens throat into it's stomach and then you use the syringe to insert the special kitten milk into it.

You need to feed it as directed. Your going to be it's mama for a little while, but I know you can do it, OP. Also, do put the kitten near it's mama so she can still bond with it some. She might even take to feeding it again, but if not, then you can take over that function and help mama kitty out with her babies.

You are Awesome, OP! Best of Luck. I'm really jealous cause I love kittens and I would be more than happy to feed and cuddle a baby:) You are soooo lucky!

I don't really like cats but I cant just let them die. I have been feeding them half and half with an egg yolk mixed in. They are all doing well so far but refuse to drink from a saucer or eat kitten food. My point being its up to You feed it and take care of it or watch it die.

Re: Got a problem. Our cat keeps abandoning one of her Kittens.
We had 2 female cats that were litter mates, and both got pregnant and had kittens the same day. One of them went to the box we had made up for her to have her kittens in, the other one had her first kitten in the neighbor's garden and left it there. Then she came home and had only 2 more, so we never knew if there were any others. The neighbor brougt us the abandonded kitten, and we put it in with her and the other 2. But she would not take care of it, so we gave it to the other cat, and she tended it like her own. After a few days, the kittens and mother cats were interchangeable, and all the kittens nursed from both mothers.

Ok.

I just got a nice shoe-box and some paper towels and put the kitten in that. I got some kitten chow, which the wife had, CRUSHED it up, put it in a little plastic measuring cup and put that in the box with the the cat.

I put the box in the family room close to momma and the other kittens so it can hear the other cats and smell them and stuff. I know it can sense when its mothers around. That will probably help it.

I got to head out for now though.
