AUSTRALIAN CARBON TAX========10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW>>>>>>>>>>>>
Carbon tax: Ten things you need to know

AUSTRALIA'S controversial carbon tax kicks in today with tax cuts and a compensation package designed to ease the pain of expected price increases of $9.90 a week for average households.
Billed as Carbon Sunday, today marks the start date of the price on pollution that has divided voters and contributed to a plunge in support for the Gillard Government.
While companies will start passing on costs from today, about 400 polluters won't actually have to pay their first lump sum instalment to the Government until June of next year.
Vowing to dump the unpopular tax as his first act as prime minister if elected, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the next election would be a referendum on the tax.
The Liberal Party will today launch a major television advertising campaign accusing Prime Minister Julia Gillard of building a carbon tax based on a lie. The ads feature repetitive ringing cash registers once used by Labor to campaign against former Liberal leader John Hewson's GST to warn the price will continue to climb.
The Liberals have dusted off Labor's killer anti-GST ads featuring the ka-ching of old-fashioned cash registers to hammer home the impact of the carbon tax.
Nearly 20 years ago, the ringing sound of cash registers was deployed in the 1993 election to attack Dr Hewson's proposed GST.

Controversial carbon tax takes effect
Posted 1 July 2012, 8:12 AEST
The political furore over the carbon tax is set to reach new levels of intensity today as one of the most divisive pieces of government policy in recent times officially begins.

.With the carbon tax set to come into effect, Jeremy Fernandez looks back at how events unfolded, and what it will mean for Australians. (Credit: ABC) .From today, around 500 businesses will be made to pay $23 for for every tonne of pollution they produce and they say they will have no choice but to pass on the cost to consumers.

The Federal Government is compensating low-income earners and says life will go on for Australian households, but the Opposition argues it the tax is an unnecessary burden during tough economic times.

To mark the day the Opposition is rolling out an advertising campaign that highlights Prime Minister Julia Gillard's policy reversal, after she announced before the 2010 election that there would be no carbon tax under a government she led.

Anti-carbon tax ads launched by the oppn

The federal opposition has launched a major advertising campaign accusing Prime Minister Julia Gillard of lying about the carbon tax.
THE $23 per tonne price on carbon emissions started on Sunday, directly impacting on 294 electricity generators and other companies.
The opposition says the tax will hurt Australian businesses and consumers and has pledged to repeal it once in power.
The Liberal Party launched its print and TV advertising campaign on Sunday, accusing Ms Gillard of lying about the tax.
The ads have appeared in the Sunday newspapers and are due to run on TV from today.
In the lead-up to the 2010 general election, Ms Gillard vowed not to introduce a carbon tax under her leadership.

Re: AUSTRALIAN CARBON TAX========10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW>>>>>>>>>>>>
Enter the Carbon Tax
June 29, 2012, 11:41 amYahoo!7

The government’s hotly debated carbon tax comes to life today and it’s time understand what it’s going to cost you.

What is the carbon tax again?
Put simply, the carbon tax is a tax on pollution. Or more precisely it’s a tax on energy sources that emit carbon dioxide.

It’s an attempt by the government to make polluting more costly for large organisations. The hope is that these large polluters will invest in clean energy alternatives to reduce the amount of carbon tax they pay and thus reducing the amount of pollution (carbon dioxide) Australia as a nation emits.

Who will be taxed?
The Clean Energy Regulator says 294 entities have now been identified as liable to pay the carbon price.

The list includes large companies like Qantas, BHP, utility companies and a total of 34 local councils which have landfill sites or produce natural gas.

related reading: Companies hardest hit by the carbon tax

These organisations will be now pay $23 to the government for every tonne of carbon dioxide they emit into the atmosphere. After the first year, the tax is then designed to increase 2.5 per cent every year, for a further three years before converting into an emissions trading scheme.

How much will it cost you?
The opposition has made much of the fact the tax will force up the price of electricity, gas, food and other goods and services.

Estimates have average household expenditure rising by $9.90 a week including $3.30 on electricity, $1.50 on gas and less than $1 on food.

The truth is that it’s hard to predict what goods and services will be affected by how much.

What is clear however is that at least some of the companies targeted by the carbon tax will be looking to pass the resulting cost increases onto their customers. Switzer.com.au reports that airlines and utility companies will find it easier to pass on most of the cost increases from the carbon tax to their clients.

Compensation
Wayne Swan has recently said that around 98 per cent of Australian households will receive some assistance with the average pocketing around $10.10 a week in compensation.

So, based on the government estimates the average Australian household earning less than $150,000 a year will actually be better off after the introduction of the carbon tax by some 20 cents per week.

Whether or not Australians will actually be better off with a carbon tax remains to be seen. While we can be sure the politicians will keep banging on about it over the next year, there’s every chance that everyday working Australians have more important things to worry about.

Re: AUSTRALIAN CARBON TAX========10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW>>>>>>>>>>>>

Why the fuck does the public have to pay a tax on things we are FORCED to use!!??

Sure, we all drive cars that pollute - BUT that's beacuse of the GREEDY oil tycoons FORCING petrol/oil on us because CLEAN energy isn't profitable.

Same with electricity - there are CLEANER ways to generate electricity BUT just not profitable for the energy tycoons.

It's all just bullshit - especially the 'less than 1 dollar' increase on food - how does that include the markup on supermarket electricity tax, delivery trucks tax, farm equipment tax, etc - once one person raises the price the next person needs to raise it as well to cover the cost. By the end you have 5-10 carbon taxes all added up and the cost moved to the last person - the customer.

JuLIAR Gillard can rot - seems like Kevin Rudd didn't want to introduce the carbon tax so he got axed and this slut put in place to go through with it. They're all just puppets - yellow-bellied, gutless, greedy, uncaring pricks.

Even this asylum seeker debacle has pissed me off - there is MORE than enough land to just give asylum seekers and set up a community for them to create their own jobs and income. Deport the trouble makers but let the honest asylum seekers stay, even make jobs for Aussies running transport across the ocean to cut out the risk. But no, we have to 'lock' the borders and, like America, turn the land of the 'free' into the land of 'we don't care about you'.

Governments are MEANT to be working FOR the people - NOT AGAINST the people.

How is the Govt going to measure this carbon tax? By using some fake instrument that some fake "scientist" has plucked out of the air? Call me cynical but I don't think the Coalition will abolish the carbon tax when they get into power simply because of the money that's going to be made from it. I can't remember when an opposition party has reversed a tax when in power.

This is it people, the carbon tax is here to stay.

Also, Australia is the experiment that other country's governments will watch very closely over the next 12 months. Just watch other countries introduce their own version of a carbon tax. We are just the first and there will be a domino affect.cry

Life goes on after carbon tax: Gillard

Day one of the carbon tax and the sky is yet to fall in.
THAT'S the message being sold by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her cabinet, who have tried to paint Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's claims about the tax as dishonest.
The $23 per tonne price on carbon emissions started on Sunday, directly impacting on 294 electricity generators and other companies.
The federal government is aiming to cut carbon emissions by five per cent by 2020, with the carbon tax shifting to an emissions trading scheme in 2015.
Mr Abbott says the carbon tax will push up prices for consumers, hurt local businesses and see jobs lost.

Anti-carbon tax rally calls for election

Rain couldn't extinguish the fury of anti-carbon tax protesters as they rallied on the steps of the Victorian parliament calling for the prime minister's head.
ABOUT 150 protesters braved rain and an 8C chill on Sunday to vent their anger at the carbon tax and the "fraudulent" Labor government.
They chanted for an election to be called and waved placards that read: "$CRAP TAX", "Get rid of a bad government and we'll get rid of a bad tax", and "No carbon tax! Labor Liars, Election Now!".
Outspoken climate change sceptic and Sydney radio presenter Alan Jones told the crowd carbon pollution was a "scandalous piece of propaganda", and Labor was "putting a stake through the heart of the nation's economic wellbeing".
"The notion of global warming is a hoax. This is witchcraft," he said.
"Common sense will tell you it's rubbish; 97 per cent of all carbon dioxide occurs naturally ... three per cent around the world is created by human beings."
Mr Jones said the tariff would tax the coal industry out of existence, denying Australian industry a competitive advantage through cheap electricity, while exporting this capability to China.
Every Australian would be affected and there would be massive consequences for employment and business, he said.

Well according to my math, locally made food products should be cheaper than imports due to the distance imported food has to travel.
so this MIGHT be a good thing as it'll make people buy more local Australian made products.
However, logic never works with the Politics so we'll see.

Other options are to invest in a couple of solar showers that are only a couple of bucks each. One per person and put them outside in the early morning so they'll be ready by afternoon early evening.

Buy plenty of throw rugs extra jumpers thick socks and coats as they can be reused yearly and use heating sparingly.

Cooking more with bbqs rather than using the stove.
Lower the thermostat on your fridge (as it's probably still at Summer levels) to save on electricity.

Buy a big bunch (as many as you can afford, I've bought 50) of those garden solar lights and charge them during the day and bring them in at night. Heaps of light for FREE.

Do more walking and catch a bus for shorter trips and leave the car at home. Start car pooling to save money. Pretend like you don't own a car for one week a month and use alternatives to get around.

Hurry and buy all the stuff you need NOW before the tax really kicks in.
I've just bought a whole pile of really nice household goods dirt cheap off Gumtree while the delivery charges are still the same.

Heaps of things to do to ride out the tax until Liberal get in and hopefully take a sledge hammer to it.

Here is a picture of a promise that Tony Abbott has made in writing, very big writing. And he signed it too. And stood in front of it and had his picture taken.

Our Pledge: "We'll immediately legislate to scrap the Carbon Tax." (signed) Tony Abbott
[link to images.smh.com.au]

So that means he has to scrap the Carbon Tax if he gets elected, right? It's a written promise, which is the kind that he said he keeps.
