The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma set the requirements for citizenship not by any blood quantum but the person has to have had one ancestor listed as Cherokee on the Dawes Roll.

Pretty sure there are Cherokees that have less than 1/64 ancestry at this point. The Dawes Roll was taken in the 1890s.

But there's three groups of Cherokees, I think the ones in the East (North Carolina) do go by blood quantum, you have to be at least 1/4 Cherokee I think. Oklahoma is the largest group though, I don't think you even have to be a resident of Oklahoma, just have that one ancestor who was listed as Cherokee on the Dawes Roll.

It's supposed to be all Native Americans not just Cherokees that are Israelites, it's a religious belief of the Mormons.

White people in the states always think I'm from some native tribe. The tribes..they just think I'm white and after seeing them I agree, in comparison I'm definitely white. Based on that I think non-natives see "native" where there is none.

I think people there just like to have a connection to the land they are on. That means clinging to tiny things that connect them like the small possibility that they're great grand uncle bob was Cherokee.

Cherokees recently banned blacks from living on their land.

Maybe that's a smart thing to do becuz they know they are just there to try and get free housing, and food and benefits. They do it here in Hollister and 85% of those over there are just redbones. Rumor is I'm 1/64 Cherokee on my mother's father's side. That means my great-gr-gr-gr-gr grandmother was a full blood Cherokee who died on the Trail of Tears(I still don't have enough proof to be totally convinced). I probably have some other Native blood on both sides of the family.
In researching my family I found out that a lot of early English settlers legally married Cherokees. Some fur traders and men who were out moving around the country had two families- white and Indian.
The Cherokees were called one of the five civilized tribes. They started following white men's ways very early and lived in houses and had a 100 percent literacy rate at a time when a lot of whites were illiterate.
About blacks claiming Native blood- I saw on a genealogy show on t.v. that most black families have a rumor about Native American blood to explain why some relative had straight hair, high cheekbones, lighter skin, etc. Turns out when they do dna tests they usually have a white ancestor or two instead of Native American.
I think it's terrible that whites with less that 1/4 Cherokee blood would try to claim tribe membership just to get scholarships and benefits due to Native Americans. As if we whites didn't screw them over enough, now we want to claim their benefits cause we have a drop of Native blood in the family tree somewhere?

Well whats strange is that for reals my grandmother was full Raramuri Native from the Sierra Madre region and my grandfather was a Spanish guy...never met him he was shot during the Mexican revolution and he was like 40 and my grandmother was 13 at the time but that would make my mom a first generation Meztizo. I'm Mexican American and its weird when i hear people say they are native and have to traits. As for me i have dark black hair, dark brown skin, i'm not balding but the Raramuri don't have high cheek bones and i don't either but i have a full beard but if i shave i look like them lol............
