Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny ... it is the light that guides your way." Heraclitus |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18903943 Canada 07/01/2012 08:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok i live in Az and see native people all the time living close to a reservation and when i see television and hear reports that most White and yes even black people claiming to be Part Native Cherokee i stop to wonder what the hell is up with these people. I have heard rumors that if they get accepted into a tribe they get benefits too and i am wondering if this is true or not. My friend who really is half Tohono because his dad was full and i mean full!!! Lived on the reservation Ect could not get a tribal card because he is half. I wonder why some people claim Cherokee and have 1/16th blood and get college aid and stuff. I have seen real and i mean real Cherokee people and there tall have tan skin and high cheek bones and straight black hair, Tohono's are usually heavy set dark complected round faced and pretty tall also. But these people claiming ancestry are usually white pasty balding people or Africa black people claiming it. Quoting: JV520 The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma set the requirements for citizenship not by any blood quantum but the person has to have had one ancestor listed as Cherokee on the Dawes Roll. Pretty sure there are Cherokees that have less than 1/64 ancestry at this point. The Dawes Roll was taken in the 1890s. But there's three groups of Cherokees, I think the ones in the East (North Carolina) do go by blood quantum, you have to be at least 1/4 Cherokee I think. Oklahoma is the largest group though, I don't think you even have to be a resident of Oklahoma, just have that one ancestor who was listed as Cherokee on the Dawes Roll. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18717409 United States 07/01/2012 08:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | some white people like to talk garbage about those with brown skin tones then turn around and pretend to be part native american because they want the benefits the native americas get (things like food, housing and education assistance) nevermind they only get those benefits because the whites utterly destroyed their culture, took their land and dignity and every earthly belonging and forced them to live in shitholes like cattle, provide them with little work opportunity and constantly supply drugs and alcohol to poison their old and their children into blithe submission |

The tribes..they just think I'm white and after seeing them I agree, in comparison I'm definitely white. Based on that I think non-natives see "native" where there is none. I think people there just like to have a connection to the land they are on. That means clinging to tiny things that connect them like the small possibility that they're great grand uncle bob was Cherokee. |

They do it here in Hollister and 85% of those over there are just redbones. The damn chief swears he's Native American,BS! He's from New Jersey and black as shit! Fucking liar! It's a scam to get money. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1145382 United States 07/01/2012 09:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In researching my family I found out that a lot of early English settlers legally married Cherokees. Some fur traders and men who were out moving around the country had two families- white and Indian. The Cherokees were called one of the five civilized tribes. They started following white men's ways very early and lived in houses and had a 100 percent literacy rate at a time when a lot of whites were illiterate. About blacks claiming Native blood- I saw on a genealogy show on t.v. that most black families have a rumor about Native American blood to explain why some relative had straight hair, high cheekbones, lighter skin, etc. Turns out when they do dna tests they usually have a white ancestor or two instead of Native American. I think it's terrible that whites with less that 1/4 Cherokee blood would try to claim tribe membership just to get scholarships and benefits due to Native Americans. As if we whites didn't screw them over enough, now we want to claim their benefits cause we have a drop of Native blood in the family tree somewhere? |

I'm Mexican American and its weird when i hear people say they are native and have to traits. As for me i have dark black hair, dark brown skin, i'm not balding but the Raramuri don't have high cheek bones and i don't either but i have a full beard but if i shave i look like them lol............ |
