Bill Gates speech: 11 rules your kids did not and will not learn in school
Don't make the choice of disregarding the message because of how you feel about the messenger as you will cheat yourself out of much truth and facts of life! If he came up with these on his own, then I have newfound respect for him- even if he didn't create them, he helped spread it.

It would behoove us all to teach our children this as well as ourselves.hf

Finally, if you have issues with it then TOUGH, get over it.hf

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Those were brilliants226

100% spot on. I especially like the self-esteem and finding yourself part. Kids [and some adults]: VERY FEW people in the real world are going to kiss your ass or treat you with political correctness. If you think the real world is like your Marxist progressive professor claimed it was, you're in for a very rude awakening.

And no, you can't work at a coffee shop all day shooting the shit and then go home to your beautiful Manhattan apartment. You'll be sharing a walk-up flat in decidedly unfashionable parts of Queens or Brooklyn and taking LONG subway commutes.

Bill Gates is a dispicable entity and should not be around children.

He should be in Africa murdering Blacks with AIDS vaccines. They will eventually turn on him.

Theres a couple of pearls of wisdom there, but its all just his opinion!

Like the 'blame your parents' line, sure, dont piss your pants & cry forever in the corner about your impotent parents, but if they are responsible for some of your present troubles, it is good to identify these inadequacies & rectify them!

Because our parents are our first & most often our life-defining teachers. Their 'shit' usually turns out to be our 'shit.' If a program is not working at the end of the process, it is because of bad code somewhere in the beginning or middle.

Bill was lucky enough to have a dad who nurtured his passion of computers at 12 years of age!!! What frickin' year was that? 1970???
When I was 10 y.o. my dad got a compensation payout & left my mum & I to survive so he could live the high-life, jetting around Britain & Europe in a type of mid-life crisis.

Well thank you. I do try to make my keystrokes worth the effort.

Quite ironically, a current affairs show here had an interview with him last night, so still fresh in my mind.

Also ironically, I had a teacher in 8th grade (1978) & he was a real computer enthusiast. Back in that timeframe computers of any real clout were only found in big businesses (mostly USA) & universities (& there's more power in your mobile phone than these dinosaurs!)

His 'lessons' were pretty much his indulgence in waffling to us students about his hobby. I used to hang off every word he said! I think the other students used to fall asleep!

If I had more adult input, who knows? I'm currently studying software engineering at university, 34 years after this 8th grade class.

No thanks to my father, mother was a different story!

Not necessarily as love conquers all, including assholes but if that fails then becoming an asshole to deal with another asshole, not only defeats the purpose but makes you an even worse asshole which means the next assholes have to be better and better assholes etc. When does it stop? When the final asshole becomes God? Stupid way to evolve humans when if you use love instead the results are better without any assholes! Just another perspective is all.hf

Where I work we were interviewing a 20-something woman for a job and we asked her why she wanted the job and she responded that she thought it would be a good opportunity FOR HER. And this was a woman with 2 college degrees. It is really astonishing how so many young people think the world revolves around them and their self-esteem.
