Australian Tsunami Alert System
Australia has high-level government frameworks and decision-making processes in place to deal with a range of hazards including natural disasters. However, in the past tsunamis as natural hazards have had limited attention due to their relatively low risk. The situation changed on 26 December 2004.
Present arrangements

Australia currently relies on the Australian Tsunami Alert System, an arrangement between Geoscience Australia (GA), the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau) and Emergency Management Australia (EMA) that provides a limited notification and alerting capability.

The ATAS utilises national capacity where available to provide notification and verification of earthquakes that may generate tsunamis. The ATAS also presently utilises alert and warning information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) in Hawaii and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) about possible tsunamis in the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Developing a more comprehensive capability

Since the Indian Ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004, the Australian Government has focussed on tsunami risk around the country and the region, and the need to provide timely and effective warning services. In the May 2005 Budget a number of initiatives designed to enhance community safety were announced. These include measures to enhance Australia's tsunami warning capabilities:

$68.9 million has been allocated over four years to progressively establish a more comprehensive Australian Tsunami Warning System (ATWS) to be managed by the Bureau, GA and EMA, with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).
The ATWS will be one of the first Indian Ocean regional warning systems, and will join the planned network of national systems, which collectively will form the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS). The ATWS will also facilitate warnings issued in the South-west Pacific through the Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS).

Nice of them if they would actually tell US on the news or something that it's up and running.
Problem is, by the time they warn people, it'll be too late anyway.
We've heard nothing about this.

Thats why we need to keep an eye on things for our selves. If there is one generated it will be at least 1500Km off shore so there will be time if anything was to occur.

time for what ? to hop in your cars and gridlock ?

lmao

If they could barely evacuate several million honky retards out of coastal texas in 30 hours, what makes the coastal populace of australia any different ? you guys have wider roads or hovercrafts or something ?

Tsunamis are a hell of a lot faster and more determined than hurricanes.

Re: Australian Tsunami Alert Systems - comes online
Perhaps they are scared of casusing any public alarm.

lets say the wave travel at 500km an hour all they way to shor for simplisity sake.

In queensland we would have about 2.5 hours to be clear and would only need to trave some 10-15 km inland to be safe.

considering the most populated place near the coatline is the gold coast of some 300,000 people, I think most would be varly safe to exit in time.

I am sure they would sound the broadcast alert horn in such a scenarion.

There really is not too much to worry if an event such as this where to happen.
