This is actually more common than you may know and doesn't have to only happen in "exceptional" heat. Sometimes it has to do with the grade of the road or the quality of the mix of the asphalt the construction workers did - and a regular summer day. I had a friend who worked in construction and they used to purposely mix asphalt so they would get a contract to come back and redo it in a couple of years. Ah, union workers.

There is a section of highway in Upstate New York that is notorious for it. One hot day about 25 years ago, a section buckled up under a family of 5 and all were wiped out in an instant. This was near my house at the time and I wrote a poem about it that began "When the devil walks in the bright sunshine..." (Just trying to legitimize my point, I don't remember the rest, don't worry!) There have been dozens of people killed from buckling on that stretch of road over the years.

Anyone in their right mind would have known this was going to buckle and closed the road. Really sick to allow anyone to drive over it. You don't usually get any warning with a heat buckle, they were lucky.

that is not fake and very common for roads to do that in extreme heat.
