I have a book in the Kindle store. It's the first book in a series that I have bee writing. I touch on a lot of the topics that folks here find interesting - conspiracy theories, veterans' affairs, gunboat diplomacy, government secrecy, alternative sciences... I think many here would find it entertaining.

It's actually today and tomorrow.

I don't know what the policy is on posting links to products and services here, but other sites don't like for you to. Send me a message and I will provide a link if you are interested.

Kudos.

maybe you could give the link from here [link to www.openisbn.com] then it's not on a shop, just for information on the book. If not I'll pm you. Maybe if a moderator reads the thread they could advise on what's acceptable or not.

Discipline and momentum are the most difficult to sustain.

Never show works in progress to others. Write, write and write some more.

Never write in public. Observe and draw inspiration from public; but never write in public.

Find your flow-time. If it's 8 am - get up every goddamn day at 8 am am discipline yourself to that hour. Same goes for 3 am oil burning night-dwellers.

Apprentice yourself to the Word. Finding your own narrative intonation will take years -- this is something that cannot be taught or learned; by observing other literary giants you will become aware of your own.

I would like to raise a question: Which of the following do you enjoy more first-person narrative, or third-person? Out of the two styles give examples of your favourites?

I've been turning this ball over in my head for weeks. So very few can employ first-person narrative successfully.

Addendum: both styles are equal. This question is not which is better, they are equal.

Merely interested what others see as successful examples of each. How does each form influence your own writing?

Re: Book Writer's Thread
For shits and giggles, here is some of mine. Man, I havene't looked at this in over a year, maybe two. This is good stuff! lol, I need to continue working on it.

Here is the Sci-Fi one I am working on.

Heroes of Scythe and Gossamer
(First paragraph in story)

It had been pitch-black night, neither blazing stars nor glowing moon to light this strange new land Jasmine and I had recently gated to, when the arachnid had unceremoniously dropped me into the dank hole. The dark surroundings I found myself in paralleled my mood; damp and black, swirling in a vacuum of apprehension. The sickly sweet breath of the alien night air was dripping with humidity and cacophonous with the cries of unfamiliar nocturnal insects whose songs - a strange litany dark with the unforgiving anxiety that only the truly alien can evoke - rose vociferous and sustained as if all at once protesting my intrusion into their night.

(...later in the story)

My God… I do not know if I am alive or dead. Everything has a hazy quality to it. Colors are non-existant. The desert stretches away beyond the dome in a vast shade of monochromatic gray. The alien sun is a giant, swirling ball of mercury. The computers and equipment still seem to be up and running, but are actually making an unfamiliar noise, a subtle vibrating that I can actually feel through the “air”. Sensations are quite strange. The vibrating is going through my body also- No… That’s not right. I think I am producing the vibrating. My entire being is humming. It is very soothing and comfortable. A roaring fills the space in my head. Though it is loud, it is not something I am hearing using my ears so the sound is not uncomfortable… actually quite the opposite. The sound resonates as if it is inside my… soul.

Perfect clarity. Every thought. Strange considering what I am experiencing. I need to check Monitor to see what is happening with the singularity, see if everything went as expected. I need to head towards the Monitor Chamber. No sooner had I thought of it and I am there. Monitor Chamber surrounds me projecting three-dimensional holographic images of the Influence Project’s progress all around the clear chamber, everything still in that all-consuming sheen of gray.

The dimensional hologram shows that the gravitational time containment field is holding the singularity’s sphere of influence together just as the computer models had shown it would. It has just recently engulfed the entirety of the planet, where I am located, since my activating the Project Trigger. The result of the singularity’s influence is causing the situation I now found myself in.

Amazing… It seems to have actually worked.

OK… Question: How did I get here, here in the Monolith Chamber from the Activation Chamber? Maybe I walked here normally, but I don’t recall the walking… That doesn’t seem right. I think back to the Activation Chamber and instantly I am there. What is going on…? Time suspension…? No. It must be some type of non-localized quantum-like distance travel. Impossible but probable. Oh, the frustrating paradox of the quantum world. Perhaps time is not running quite linear now. Space and distance appear normal due to the constant of light, but with the aspect of time warped from the singularity’s influence sphere, it is virtually taking me no time to move distances. That poses the problem of my mass though. I bring my hand up in front of my face. It is like a metallic fog awash with quarks and quirks jumping in and out of space/time at a beautiful rate. The dances of particles are falling or dripping out of the metallic fog, trying unsuccessfully to retain my shape, constantly losing then regaining coherence. Perhaps that is exactly the same way I am jumping these short distances. Wait a minute. Conservation of mass… My body... There I am, standing beside the holographic Project Trigger Activation Icon. Immobile. Mentally it is an extremely odd experience seeing myself standing there, when I am here also. This is not good. I need to get back inside my body. I slide my “fog” self into my standing, physical body, but slip out and away from it like an object moving on a frictionless surface. Again I try. Again I fail. Again. Panic surges into my thought patterns. Oh no… I can’t get back in…

OK… Question: How did I get here, here in the Monolith Chamber from the Activation Chamber?

 Quoting: Swinging on Spirals

Since you are employing a first person narrative; stay away from posing redundant structure styles such as the protagonist declaring he is asking a question within his own stream of consciousness -- followed by the question.

It is redundant. You need to shape your protagonists character more sharply and learn when to reveal pertinent information verses an information dump on the reader.

When creating an alternate reality, be in the form of fantasy or science-futuristic oriented world, there is a fine balance between over-saturation of technical details and truly vivid encompassing landscapes that draw the reader in.

Keep a critical eye on the following: Punctuation, paragraph breakage and proper noun capitalization.

Please take this as constructive con-crit. Care to share some of your influences? There seems to be reticence in this thread to debate literary works.

in 2008, Silverthought Press NY brought out two novels of mine, the anti-corporate Bukkakeworld and the angel-apocalypse Planet of the Owls.

2011, Yoroppa and View From A Stolen Window were two further released novels.

I've just finished an 80,000 words novel called Free Planet, sorta-corporate-busted genetic-sci-fi-horror, it's with a literary agent.
