Not on Food Stamps? USDA says you're harming your community...
The USDA claims that eligible people who do not participate [in Food Stamps] are actually harming their communities by preventing additional funds from entering their respective economies.

“[Food Stamps] is an investment in our future. It offers nutrition benefits to participating clients, supports work, and provides economic benefits to communities,” USDA explains on one of its outreach pages. “However, too many low-income people who are eligible for the program do not participate and thus forgo nutrition assistance that could stretch their food dollars at the grocery store. Their communities lose out on the benefits provided by new [Food Stamp] dollars flowing into local economies.”

The USDA also claims increasing food stamp participation is an economic stimulus.

“If the national participation rate rose 5 percentage points, 1.9 million more low-income people would have an additional $1.3 billion in benefits per year to use to purchase healthy food and $2.5 billion total in new economic activity would be generated nationwide."

The money is first taken out of the community by all the taxes, payroll taxes, etc.

Food stamp money flowing back in really does stimulate the economy.

Many people who are on food stamps would otherwise have zero money to pay for anything other than rent, bills and food.

It isn't just the grocery stores who benefit (and everyone who draws a paycheck in the grocery industry).

It's all the other services and shops who can have customers because they actually might have enough money to buy clothes, shoes, a bus card and get a haircut.

I have two jobs and am still eligible for the full food stamp award.

I have worked and paid taxes my whole life and it's not my fault everything is so screwed up and the cost of living has tripled while wages stayed the same.

Food Stamps were never meant for people-they were meant to subsidize the grocery store chains agribusiness and the giant food processing companies; it is a mere necessary nuisance that they have to flow thru people first, instead of mailing subsidy checks strait to the companies named above

About a year ago there were ads on radio, in NJ, urging people to check their eligibility. The pitch went something like this: Even if you have a job,a car and own your own home, you may be eligible for food stamps. Then they gave a website address where you could check to see if you qualified!

"Food Stamps is an investment in our future"

really? what an odd comment to make, as I've never looked at public assistance as being an investment for anything.

We are not on public assistance of any kind, and never have been, although I know many families that are. Mostly due to the economic collapse in recent years. I cannot make any broad statements to everyone in the country collecting food stamps right now, but I will comment on the families that I know personally, and how this has affected them:

-Most of these families have never qualified in the past for public assistance and would much rather EARN their money from working. Not relying on anyone (incl the govt) to feed and take care of their families.

-Most of these people I refer to have lost a LOT of their dignity and they feel ashamed to use the food stamp card in the grocery store. Many have made comments to me, that they are horrified to run into friends/former collegues during the check-out process (embarrassed) and now have resorted to doing their shopping during 'off peak' hours

-Many of these same people are now in a chronic depressed state. Some are self-medicating (drugs/alcohol) some are on prescription drugs (seratonin replacements) which are apparantly being handed out just like Smarties & Tootsie Rolls are during Halloween

-Many of these people are so withdrawn & depressed that they make casual statements to me such as:

"I really don't care what happens at this point"
"I wish a hole would open up so I could jump in it"
"This shit aint getting better....and it never will"

-Most of these families are middle-class families, just like most of you that are reading this, and this is a trend that will continue unless something is done to stop it. These people are my friends, my family, & my neighbors that USED to have goals, vacation funds, and hobbies. While none of them are rich people, they budgeted their money, preferring to pay cash v/s using credit cars & long term loans...especially on 'non-emergency' type items. If they didn't have the funds to pay cash for something, then they waited to buy <whatever> until they did.

I am in NO WAY saying that the food stamp program is bad, because it's not. However, seeing first hand how demoralizing it can be, I definitely would NOT label it as 'an investment in our future'....I would also raise an eyebrow to those people and agencies that make it seem like a 'good thing'.

They know whats up, and they know EXACTLY what they're doing. This is just another goal of theirs on the list of:

'How to Destroy a Nation'

Don't be fooled people...it's a trap. And anyone that says differently is NOT looking out for YOUR best interest. Trust me on that one.

Just my two cents tho.....hf

Re: Not on Food Stamps? USDA says you're harming your community...

This comports with what I see also. And when our healthcare is added in, it is only going to be even worse and just about total ownership by the government.

Depressing to even think about the increase in taxes that's going to cause the poor and very poor.

Then the screws will start to be tightened...
One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one.

Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy

Re: Not on Food Stamps? USDA says you're harming your community...
Not entirely goofy... I have a Chinese neighbor in her early 70s who used to be fabulously wealthy and is now a bit demented and living on a small disability check. She refuses to take food stamps as a point of pride and lives mainly by cadging meals off wealthier friends (like me) and eating cloves of garlic washed down by tea. She weighs about 85 lb (at 5'7") and doesn't look real great at all. I told her I wouldn't help her any more until she got a food stamp card because I just can't watch her starve herself any more.
